Fixing for a Friend - Fans Spin, but no BIOS beeps, etc

Hi,
Im fixing my friends computer, which specs im not sure of, but its a

P4 LGA 775 (Speed not sure),
1GB RAM (Unknown Brand),
Asus X800XL Graphics,
Asus P5RD1 Mobo,
Winpower 550w 28a PSU (Came with Coolermaster Centurion)

Anyway, heres the problem:

The computer has been running fine for about 6 months now, but all of a sudden problems started.

From what he said, one day the computer was complaining that the 3.3v was too low. Then it stopped working.

When he would turn it on, all the fans would spin, the mobo light was on, but there were no BIOS beeps or any output to the monitor. Also, the CD Drive was making a clicking sound, and the light was flashing.

Its been like this for a while, and now hes brought it to me. My first thought was PSU, and I had a brand new Akasa Powerplus 650w 55a PSU to test with.

I discovered that the PSU that was in it was a 20pin psu, and a 24 pin convertor was on it. This seemed OK. Then I put in the Akasa PSU, and the same thing happened.

Then I unplugged the CD Drive, just to see if that might be doing something to it. Nope, still the same thing.

So then I just stripped it out and rebuilt it. I left out basicly everything, its only got the Mobo, CPU, RAM, and GPU on it. And yet again, still no beeps, no display.

Ive tried both PSUs on both the X800XL and the integrated graphics, with no effect.

All the wiring is OK, ive checked it all over. Also, i reset the CMOS.

Anyone else got any more suggestions? I think its the motherboard, but Im hoping theres another explianation.

Cheers,
Helmie :D

CPU-Z would be able to tell you the missing info, but anyways...

From what you've said I would be inclined to suspect the motherboard as well. Did you have to use the 20-pin converter with the Akasa?

Since the pc was complaining about not receiving enough power, and despite replacing the psu the same problems appearing, I really think you are looking at motherboard damage, although I don't know whether a surge caused it or something else.

Wow. The first thing I thought when I read this was also the PSU or that you had to clear the CMOS but you've covered all of that. Have you tried testing the CPU and everything else with another mobo by chance? To me it just sounds like something overheated on the mobo or something is wrong with the voltage. I say test the mobo at your local computer shop and see what they say. Good luck!

Nope, the Akasa has a 24 Pin lead. Im pretty sure now that its the mobo, theres nothing else that can explain it all really.

No, i dont reaelly want to take my computer apart to test it, and the only computer shop thats likely to have a LGA775 mobo around here is around 70 miles away :(
