is there any way to flash the bios from, say, a bootable flash drive or cd? because i need to and cannot access windows, but can get to the splash screen

What motherboard or computer are we talking about? Usually you download the makers flash utility and the bios update rom file and put them both on the usb key or cd/floppy.

its an hp dv2000. a dv2124nr iirc. i cam boot into the bios sometimes, sometimes it doesnt even display anything. all of the bios updates on their website require windows

I would suspect bad hardware, not a bad bios. Loose connection somewhere.

idk, apparently there was a huge recall with the hp dv2000 series notebooks, and the warranty was extended by another year. but it was something about the bios corrupting. if i have to get a new mobo, i guess i will. hell, i traded a bunch of stuff i got for free for it

Try removing the hard drive and try turning it on and see if it posts a few times or so. I'm still guessing hardware issue. If a bios is corrupt, its not gonna boot normally every so often.

sometimes it goes all the way to the windows loading screen, then it just cuts out, and everything stops, but the lights stay on. O, and theres a red line that goes half way up the screen when it starts to load windows, but it doesnt when i go into the bios

tried without the hdd, same. tried each stick of ram in my netbook and they are all good.

i forgot to mention, when it does go to bios, all the fans spin, but when the screen is just blank, the cpu fan, hdd dont even attempt to start spinning
