I try to double click on a folder to open it and it just brings up the search screen instead. sometimes it will open the folder in a new window. i have tried resetting all defaults related to folders and it hasnt work. any one any ideas?

Do you have a Windows installation disk onhand? Besides a possible virus you will probably find the explorer, exe and other system files were damaged somehow. The system file checker can correct a number of problems when it repairs or replaces any system files found damaged or missing as it verifies each.

You would need to have the Windows disk in the cd or dvd drive in order for the system utilitiy to copy any needed files to the drive. You start this by typing "sfc /scannow" at the Run prompt and pressing the enter key. It takes several minutes at times but is one useful tool for debugging problems.

Didnt work, i think it has something to do with the way a folder is opened. i went into TOOLS>FOLDER OPTIONS>FILE TYPES (TAB) and in there under folder, when i go to advanced properties, there is no open action and the same for hard drive. any idea how i could create this?

Did you look over the "view" tab with the "apply to all folders" option? or try changing a setting in the general tab like the "use Windows classic folders" to see if any settings could be changed? It sounds like either Windows was never installed completely or something has now removed administrative access from your default user account. You may want to try a few removers like AVG 7.5, the trial version of Webroot's Spy Sweeper, or the Microsoft malware removal tool in order to scan the system.
