Im going to be selling my computer on eBay, and i want to know how to format it, and have the person who buys it from me be able to install a windows OS on it. My plan was to boot from my win xp cd, and delete the partitions that are on there, however im not sure if this will actually get all of the data off of it or not. So if anyone else knows of a program that will get rid of all my data, please let me know.

ANd im not sure if i need to format it or not, just need to delete all of the files on there.

I like the tool that Maxtor has. It creates a startup disk that will over write the drive with 0's. Nothing will be left. So you can get rid of everything and start the purchaser with a clean slate.

You don't necessarily have to have a program
You can just format it and it will remove everthing on the hard drive
From there you can install windows xp from the cd making it look completely untouched

what about a low level format utility? im pretty sure that would completely oblitorate any data on the drive

Boot & nuke, will wipe the drive to the extent the US Dept of Defense uses to wipe their drives... nothing is recoverable after. the new owner would only need to boot to their WindowsXP cd and go thru the normal format and install process.

Greetings,

If you are not sure if the data is gone, then you can use data restore tools to check if something can be recovered. Among the most powerful are IMHO Uneraser (for DOS) and partition recovery utilities. They have the most awesome algorithms so you will be able to verify, if the data is gone indeed.
