Format help

I'm trying to format my hard drive (for speed and gaming)
But every time it says
Windows cannot format the drive, quit anu disk utilities or other programs that are using the drive. And make sure no window is displaying the contents of the drive.
I'm using a COMPAQ laptop (2002 I think)
I format my hard drive by right clicking on the disk.
Please help!
 
Cant format windows (drive) from within windows, its in use. lol You do know formating it will wipe windows off? Are you planning doing a clean install?

You can't format the drive windows is installed on while inside windows. If you are wanting to reinstall windows then you will need to boot to the install cd or boot to the recovery partition.
