Format HP?

So my mom's laptop got infected with Spyware and I just want to format it and start over because I've been needing to for awhile anyways. I have the recovery disks and everything but I need to know how to dump everything and start over? I've been researching it all and can't find anything. I've done this before but with help of someone else, and I'm not sure how to do it :|

Do you need to backup any data first? If not it should be as simple as putting the recovery disks in and booting from the CD. You might have to adjust your boot order in the BIOS so that you can boot from CD.

Of course if you don't have time, it's better to format it.
