my mom got an old computer from her workplace some time ago. now, she wants to format the harddrive completely. but, i dont know the windows logon password. it runs windows 200 pro. any way i can format without the password? anyway to recover or reset it? thanks for the help.

Why do you need to logon if you are going to format ?
Assuming there's no work documents that belongs to her just pop in the windows 2k cd and off you go. do you have a win2k disc ?

have you tried administrator ?

oops if it comes from a workplace the admin account would be blocked

You dont boot into windows. Boot to the 2000 CD. If there is not at the bottom of the first boot screen Press--- Key for boot order. You will have to change your boot order to the CD first in the bios.

she does want to look through the files first. then clear it off. i just found out, she doesnt want it completely formatted, but just cleaned. so windows 2000 is still on it. but we dont have a 2000 boot disk. which isnt a problem. just getting on the computer.

We can't help you reset the password. If she received this computer from work, and she hasn't been granted access to the account, there's probably a good reason.
