formatting hard drive

Hi all

I was wondering if anyone out there would be able to help me. my computer seems to have a virus that i can't get rid of. i have tried to reinstall windows xp but my computer will not run anything in the cd drive. i can open up a disc that is in my cd drive to see what is on the disk but if i try to run anything nothing happens. this means that when i put my xp in the drive and boot up with the cd drive set in the bios first, it does not find anything in the drive. i have tried to format the hard drive using the command prompt but am having problems with that as well.i tried typing in format c: /fs:ntfs/q/c/x but it came back with all ntfs boot sectors are unreadable. i have also tried format c: /fs/ntfs but it says it cannot run because the volume is in use by another process and would i like to force a dismount, but when i put y, it says cannot lock the drive the volume is still in use.
please could someone give me some advice on what to do to get my computer running properly again before i throw my computer out of the window.

many thanks, homerbigal

Sentence structure is your (and our) friend.

What kind of Windows CD are you using? Did it come with a pre-built system, did you buy it Retail? Other?

ye sorry about the sentence structure

the windows cd is one that i bought off ebay that has worked before when i have reinstalled windows.

what i was trying to do was reformat the hard drive which hopefully would get rid of the virus so that i can install windows again, but i don't seem to be able to reformat the hard drive.

is it possible that there is a problem with the actual hard drive or is it a virus that is causing the problem?

what do i need to put into the command prompt to be able to format the hard drive?

many thanks, homerbigal

Are you booting from the CD or the HD?

i am trying to boot up from the cd drive which it is set to boot up from first but it does not find anything in the drive and then just boots up from the hard drive.

if i put a disc into the cd drive i can right click on the drive and open up the disc to see what is on it but if i try to run anything on the disc nothing happens.

i am presuming there is a virus on the computer that is stopping my cd drive from working properly

Unless there is a specific driver that is needed to run the CD-ROM it should work at the basic hardware level. You should be able to see it when it detects at POST.

Check your cabling and BIOS setting to make sure.
