formatting hd

i am trying to format my hd but it says it cannot format this drive and to exit all progs using that drive but i dont have anything open except "my computer" which i need open to access the drive any ideas please

You're trying to format a Drive that is in use (ie - Windows is installed on it and you're in Windows).

Yeah, you're going to have to get your OS disc into the C:/ drive and boot from disc to format properly. Can take anywhere from 10 minutes to 10 hours. I know with my TB, it took aaaaages.

Some OS discs, like 2000 pro i know for sure you can pop it in the CD drive before your OS starts and it will give you the option to load the CD, and you can format and reinstall pretty quickly that way.
