I heard that it's possible to format a harddrive to NTFS, but cannot be formatted back. I just wanted to know that if it's possible to format a External Harddrive from FAT32 to NTFS without messing something up. Will it?:confused:

It wont mess anything up if you do that. And if you want to install FAT32 on there just use a older operating system like windows 98 and it should install it in FAT32.

Are you talking about converting? As in converting a drive from FAT32 to NTFS without deleting the data? I think you are right, you can only convert FAT32 to NTFS but not the other way, but I don't see the point of converting, just backup all the data you need and do a clean format into the file system you want. Who still uses windows 98 these days anyway.

It's possible to convert FAT32 to NTFS without losing data but there is always a chance you will have to format it.

It is a very risky procedure, that I strongly advise against taking. Just backup and format, converting is a waste of time. If you are out of space, then just get a new drive, they are so cheap now. I saw a 500GB SATA2 hard drive for just $AU165, what a steal!!! :D:D:D

there are better security functions un NTFS file system. NTFS is better when you have more than one accounts on your computer. it also makes less the possibility of damaging files if for ex a program crashes.

Also NTFS is slightly faster I think in terms of accessing speed, it doesn't have the FAT table, but its really negligible.
