i was formatting my friends computer today and everything went smoothly until windows booted. it formatted ok but when it got to the boot screen it kept freezing. so i tried formatting again and the same thing happened again. it kept freezing. now my friend has a dead computer. what could be going wrong and how do i fix it?

By format, I assume you were reinstalling Windows. On this assumption, I would say that the problem isn't related to the hard drive. Did your friend have any problems before the format?

Did you do a quick format or a full format? If you did a quick format, that's no indication of the health of the drive. All that does is wipe the MFT. I would try doing a full format. It takes a while, but if there are problems it will most likely let you know.

Enable SMART in the BIOS. On bootup it will tell you if you have a faulty drive.

I suppose there is also a possibility that the RAM is messing up. One way to find out is to test it with Memtest386+.

both times i formatted i did a complete format. wasted a whole afternoon. i formatted his computer about 1 and a half months ago but he managed to stuff up his comp again by downloading stuff off ares. so any idea on how to fix it? hes only got one HDD

the computer was working and everything before we tried to format. can ram go bad if you try and format?

the computer was working fine except for all the spyware and stuff like that. so what can i do to fix it?

No, download memtest386+ and either burn a bootable CD or make a bootable floppy. Boot the computer with the disk and the test will run automatically. Leave it on overnight and see what happens.
