do you guys know how to put a forum on a website, i would like it to be free
//thanks

Edit: and about how much space a decent sized forum takes up

What kind of forum are you looking to use? There are several free options.
The majjor two you can use that are free are
PHPbb
SMF

I suggest SMF

Just the forum along can take up to 50mb, then you need a MySQL database to store all the posts and member and everything in.

Your host supports PHP and MySQ: databases right? You need those, and FTP, because forum's consist of hundred's of files which would take for each going one by one with brower uploading.

yea the host supports all that but rite now i only have 50 mb of space, so i guess ill upgrade to at least 500mb...

what do i do, do i just go to the SMF site and download what they have there?

Yeah, pretty much, SMF Is a very easy install ussaly, Just create a MySQL Database then go to
http://www.simplemachines.org/download.php

and I suggest scrolling down just a little bit and downloading the SMF RC2 install package, ITs a RC for the 1.1 that is not out yet, its much bettr then the 1.0.5 then upload everything, and once that is done go to yourdomain.com/forumdirectory/install.php and will out the forum.

Forums should never take up more than 5meg. Unless you have a huge ammount of skins on there, which is pointless IMO. The database can get huge, but you can just empty logs and remove really old pointless threads every so often.

I've seen it, I prefere it as my forum choice. But, it's bloated IMO. It is unnessasery for a forum to be bigger than 5meg.

I looked at my smf folder, and it was 6meg something. Thats with an extra theme or two.

*Edit*
After removing my extra theme, and the un needed files it was 2.89 meg. Leaving enough space for an average sized website if you have an account with 50meg of space.
