That sounds almost like a SMART error. Do you have this option in your BIOS as well? Try enabling it if so and see if it gives you any errors when you boot. Or, I think Speedfan has a SMART checker thing...

With XP System Mechanic and Diskkeeper are kind of a waste there since the XP defragmentor utility is far better then the older versions of Windows. The best drive tools are provided by the manufacturer. For Western Digital that would be the LifeGuard drive utilities there. Seagate and Maxtor have their own. Unregistared Preview Conversion? Are you running a shareware version of Diskkeeper?

yea i have smart checked. what do it do? should i uncheck it? It doesnt give me errors at start up, when i use system mechanic is says my hard drive could be damaged. Is that the case? and i decided to defrag and got that message.

Hmm...it might have nothing to do with SMART, just that error sounds similar to ones you get when one of the SMART checks fails... If SMART passes fine, then it's probably nothing serious. Just see what the program is complaining about. Fragmentation shouldn't cause any problems with your computer other than maybe some slower performace.

What make is the drive itself? Besides the probable misread errors seen with the 3rd party programs there you can use a regular drive diahnostic tool from the manufacturer to verify the integrity of the drive as well as scan for any bad sectors on it.
