Frame rate issue

I have been trying to play the witcher 2, amd whenever I start the game the frame rate will be somewhere around 40 but it slowly starts to decrease the longer I play, and after around 6 minutes it will be at around 15 frames. I can play the same part that I was 6 minutes ago running 40 frames on and now be running 10, anyone know why this could be happening

my specs

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Quad Core Processor AM3 3.4GHZ

MSI GeForce GTX 560 Ti Twin Frozr II OC 880MHZ 1GB

Kingston ValueRAM KVR1333D3N9K2/4G PC3-10666 4GB 2X2GB DDR3

How hot are the cpu and gpu getting? If you dont have a temp monitoring program then try CPUID's HWMonitor or RealTemp.

I like RealTemp because you can set an alarm to sound if your cpu or gpu gets to a high-temp you set as undesirable. But HWMonitor usually gives voltage levels as well as battery info if on a laptop. Both show min and max since you started/opened them each time.

RealTemp operates as an exe you run, so no installation required.
HWMonitor requires installation.

To try and determine the cause of this problem try this. Read through the steps before you do them (print them so you have them). And work fast through the steps, but play the game as you normally would at step 4.
  1. First, leave the computer idle for about 30 minutes (meaning dont do anything on it for 30 minutes and close any open programs and make sure your anti-virus isnt scheduled to start scanning any time in the next hour of beginning these steps!).
  2. Now after the 30 minute downtime right before you would normally play the game start task manager and select the performance tab (drag task manager window so its long <------> and a long graph is displayed). Show one graph for each CPU(the green line) and show Kernel (in view)(the red line)).
  3. Now start the temp program.
  4. Start the game and play until the frame rate slows, exit the game and immediately take a screen shot of task manager performance tab and the temp program together.
  5. After that you can analyze the two to see if you have an overheating issue or if the cpu is overworked or a mix of the two.

Agree with him. Sounds like it plays fine at idle temp, but when it gets hot, it slows down. Could be the CPU or GPU. If its the CPU, consider an aftermarket cooler. If GPU, try to add more fans or create better airflow in your case. That would also help your CPU temp.

I tested to see like you said but my gpu and cpu are both only running at around 50 degrees Celsius, on other games I run at this temperature with no issues. Is it possible that the game itself has something to do with it?

Have you tried turning off Ubersampling in the game graphics options? This setting works by trying to render every frame several times then merge those multiple renders into one frame for display. It makes things "clearer", but it might be part of the problem. A lot of computers can't run this option.

The thing to keep in mind is to play the game after you mess with each setting to see if each setting adjustment has made an improvement. If you change a lot of settings at the same time you won't know which change helped! Take your time with this, and I recommend taking notes, that way you will have notes from what worked and what didn't for future use and so you know what you changed in the past.

So:
  1. Turn off Ubersampling then play the game, notice an improvement? If so then leave it off. (I recommend turning this off first, seems that a lot of people have trouble with it.)
  2. Then try reducing anti-aliasing or anisotropy a little, notice an improvement? If so then leave it turned down. If turning them down a little didn't help, turn anti-aliasing or anisotropy fully off. Notice an improvement? If so then leave it off, if it didnt help then just turn it back on.
  3. And so forth with other settings...
