Free A-V

Which one would you recommend I try?

My Norton is ending soon and I want to try something else to see if there is really a difference. I don't want to uninstall it, just want to try an A-V and if I prefer Norton, keep it.

Is there a way to turn it off for a few days to try something else? And which one would you recommend? ( this question goes to GameMaster, Ceewi1 and Buzz1927).

Thanks

Never used Norton but I know it's of course possible to turn it off-disable for couple of days. If it's like every other A-V it's down, minimized to tray? If so, click on it right click and Exit, or Quit.
Now, which one to try?
Of course you know for three great A-Vs which are free, Avast!, AVG and Antivir.
So from that three I'd choose Avast! or AVG ( Avast! is great but I know it also consumes much memory and slows down your comp a bit, especially startup ).
Also, I use Nod32 full version and I konw you can't get one free, but there is Eset antivirus, and lol, that's new Nod32, and you can get it free...not available on Vista, you are using Vista?
So, what can you try, if you ask me everything is better than Norton :P
Now, we can wait what ceewi says :P

Okay, I'll try AVG today, and let's see how it goes.

I'm not using Vista until I HAVE to ;)

i wasn't suppose to answer but i will.
First off you can turn norton off yes, but you yourself know better that running 2 AV (even if norton is off) will crap your system (excluding if you have good specs).
And yes i will agree with gamemaster, but on (Avira) Antivir only.
i don't like avg nor avast.
And there's no such thing as experts on viruses, just people who knows how to deal with em

cheers

I'm not looking for an improvement in speed, I really don't care about my speed, I don't game much on my computer ;) It runs smooth with Norton :P

I'm looking for a better A-V, but the thing that I like in Norton is that it has a A-V, A-S and A-Spam...

AVG doesn't... I'll scan this afternoon and it picks up something, then Norton is gone tonight ;)

Haha nice post patrick. Although just
people who knows how to deal with em
are really called experts everywhere, lol.
And, disabled Norton can't interfere with any other A-V, there is one thing only it can do: hog your memory and slow down your computer. Oh wait, if you use Norton, you already suffer it!
So...try what you judged as the best benji :P

But the paid for AVG Suite has A-V, A-S and A-Spam :)

I'm scanning with AVG at the moment, and it has found two threats (be ready to laugh):

Infection: Tojan Horse VB.CEC
Files: Smitfraudfix.exe, smiUpdate.exe

...Looool

I use Nod32 too, only one part I just can't understand...
Try to grow up? Did I say sth that is immature or sth?
Also, if on below my avatar you see number 20, would you tell me the same? No you wouldn't , so who has to grow up here, You do.

Haha benji!
Doesn't matter, every good A-V will find a virus in Smitfraudfix lol, it's natural.
Keep going lol you won't find anything I bet. The only reason why I use Antivirus is when I download, I like internet online protection of Nod32 and Avast! had one hell good online protection.

There are some notes when you download SmitfraudFix and on all canned speeches that include it, that your antivirus will most likely find Smitfraud Fix as a virus. They say just ignore it and that's it.
So we can judge on two ways: AVG and all others are paranoid and Norton is better,
or
AVG and others are good and Norton is missing it.
Same case when you have installed two AV-s and one finds a virus in quarantine of the other one. Tricky, but that's how it is.

Patrick I want to stop arguing, you're making this whole thread looking like a pointless argue. If you think you're better in security or sth, OK, why don't you just help people and leave me alone?

Or Norton know it's harmless and ignores it :)

Yeah I did a research on VB.CEC and it's nothing. That's mainly because some tools shut down processes in order to run faster and better. ;)

I'm still scanning, nothing new :)

One scan and that's all? Hey...let's make a test. I'll send you my fake Trojan I made on Virtual PC and ( that would be Trojan-Broken link lol, harmless ) and let's see if Norton AND Avg can get rid of it.
