Would it pay to temporarily disable in msconfig startup options.

Although you have shut it down from your system tray I could bet my bottom dollar it is still running in the background.

I have seen instances that even when norton is meant to have been uninstalled and it was still starting up services and running in the background, slowing down computers sadly. This might have been a reason for a slow scan time.

I personally like Avast! when installing a new av for its boot-time scan option upon installation.
