Of course getting a free antivirus does not compare to the paid ones, but just wondering which free antinvirus program gives you the best capabilities and offers more? and also will not slow your computer down.

Actually the best one (in my opinion) is free. Here is the link:

I found this website with a whole list of free programs that are better than similar programs that aren't free. If you would like I can try to find it again.

Some free ones are as good (some may claim them to better!) then paid ones. The one i use is the one Lamilia linked above.

I found that Avast Home Edition to be the best free one that I have tried yet. A simple registration after install. An email with a key will be sent to you and give you 1 year of free virus updates, also program updates. After the year all you have to do is register again and another key will be sent. All is absolutely free. Once a year registration for a free anti virus with all the virus and program updates included.Great software, I stopped paying for subscriptions forever.

Do you find that any of these when used to do updates or scanning clog up the computer's speed ?

Well, any virus scan is going to bog down your computer, doesn't matter what program paid or free.

As far as updates, AVG does them automatically or manually. They are fast and easy, have never had a problem with mine. I use AVG Free and would take it over Norton or McAffee any day.

AMEN! No longer will I be held hostage to Norton's obscenely high renewal prices. Avast! caught more viruses in my first month of using it than Nortons' ever did in four years. Avast! is a winner!

nah i agree that AVG Free is the best antivirus ive tried out (i liked it better than Avast but thats more opinion i guess)...AVG doesnt really slow it down all TOO much except when starting up it goes really slow...like someone else said the updates are very easy to do and it has a very simple, friendly user interface

NOTHING beats Anti-Vir, have even purposely tested the sucker, and still works like a charm. Haven't had any problems since installing about a year and a half ago... :)

For me, it's Avast! This free antivirus works much better than paid ones for me. It also isn't a resource hog like Norton and updates fast and easily :)

For all you bleeding heart free antivirus activist you should realy do your homework before you post a statment like AVG and AVAST are better than norton or other top antiviruses!

To me, that makes Avast! better than Norton, no matter what any "report" says. I'm going by personal experience, and that's what matters. I stand by my endorsement.

Surfing habits change, maybe that month you hit more pornsites or other sites that was infected with viruses?

Sometimes I can go weeks without ever having my AV catch something and then other times it seems like every page I click on it catches something, so basically it all depends on what you do on the internet!

I wish it WERE pornsites! Actually, I got quite a few trojan warnings just from visiting Google, viruses hidden in legit software downloads (PE Builder, for one), and virus warnings for a few software-related sites. ;) I only installed Avast! this past November.
