I just installed Vista from XP. About 23 gigs is filled already. I deleted the folder that says "windows old" which was about 5 gigs. Is vista supposed to take up this much space, whatelse can i delete. Thanks for any suggestions.

It sounds like all your installed programs are still there after you upgraded to Vista.
If you don't use them, uninstall them.
If you want just Vista installed (it's called a clean install), then you'll either have to get a full version (not an upgrade) of Vista or an OEM version.
You can use a Vista upgrade disk to do a clean install, but it's a very lengthly process.

Basically, you will have to do a clean install of XP, upgrade to Vista, then boot again to the Vista upgrade disk, and then it will allow you to delete the Vista partition for a clean install.

Good luck!

"Just reformat the drive and do a clean install of vista. Why all the other steps?"

Upgrade disks won't allow it.
The delete partition/create a new partition/format option is not available unless the Vista setup sees a Vista partition.
Weird, but true.
