Arch Linux: http://www.archlinux.org/
Debian: http://www.debian.org/
Fedora: http://fedoraproject.org/
Foresight Linux: http://www.foresightlinux.org/
Gentoo: http://www.gentoo.org/
Kubuntu: http://www.kubuntu.org/
LinuxMint: http://www.linuxmint.com/
Mandriva: http://www2.mandriva.com/
Mepis: http://www.mepis.org/
OpenSUSE: http://www.opensuse.org/en/
PCLinuxOS: http://www.pclinuxos.com/
Slackware Linux: http://www.slackware.org/
Ubuntu: http://www.ubuntu.com/

Of those, I would recommend Ubuntu. There are many more out there, because most free ones are based off Linux, which is freeware. The different versions have their differences obviously, you just need to look for which is best for you

Any of those will not support windows games out of the box. You will need 3rd party software to get them running. Cedega, Crossover games and Wine with play on Linux will help but it process is still hard and generally will not give the same performance as a Widows machine.

hmm, that sucks, i might give it a try and how on a decade old machine i have lying around, geuss it cant harm me (even older than the one im on now) :P, if i wanted to revert back to windows would i do a full destructive system recovery (i think thats what its called)?

Linux is a great choice for older machines. I have installed Ubuntu on a few desktops that can barely handle XP but it ran great with Linux

I forgot to ask in the last post, What games are you wanting to play? There are a few games that are like the major titles in Windows but developed for Linux.

There are much more than that and all of those are free to download if I am not mistaken. Those games should be supported right out of the box like they would be if you were on a Windows PC.

If you want to go back to XP all you need to do is boot the install cd reformat the drive and install XP.

Did you know that you can install Ubuntu using Wubi (which will autorun when you insert the CD), which will allow you to easily uninstall it using the Windows Add/Remove Programs panel if you don't want it? This way you can run Ubuntu on your current machine without worries.
You can also download the Wubi utility here and it will download Ubuntu for you and install it that way.

BTW thanks Aastii for listing those distros, there's a few there that even I haven't tried :D

Fedora would be the desktop version of that i would say... very nice distro as well.

If you have an old machine i would suggest giving Linux Mint LXDE a try
