freeze during install

toying around i decided to install windows on an ancient machine i had lying around here in the shop.

specs.
pIII
886 mhz
512 mb sdram.
40 gb laptop ide harddrive :)

it is freezing on the completing configuration of WMI. in the windows installing components section. This is an nlited version of windows that is quite lightweight.

1. should i wait longer? 20 minutes so far.
2. Restart and try again with same OS
3. restart and try a different, full install disc?
4. take out all of my unneeded hardware and try something else.
5. give up because i'll prob never use the machine when complete :)


this OS disc has installed on other machines.

ha! 30 minutes later (50 total) it kicked on through and started installing the start menu items and started registering components. so, cool. but i am willing to hear opinions on whether i should try and go to linux or whatever :)
 
I don't know if XP would function on that really. Looks like 2000 to me, but maybe it could meet XP requirements. I think the best OS for older systems would have to be Win2000 but I've never been a linux/mac fan myself. I'ma Windows user. :D

Windows 2000 Professional AND Windows XP will work well on that configuration.

As for Windows Vista and Windows 7,this might sound crazy,but even they will work well if you increase the virtual RAM to 4096 MB and adjust all other options such as decreasing the graphic quality in the GRAPHIC driver options,decreasing some components in Windows OS options and so on.;)

lubo. was trying xp-lite sp2 it hung again when registering components.

thanks concord. does anyone have a spare win2000 key they would pm me to test with?

*'s I won't try vista, but I have a lite version of 7 based on the 7157 build that i had running on a p4 1.7 with 320mb ram.

I threw puppy live cd in and it came up fairly fast. not a big linux guy, but if i can get it running on lightweight OS, it would be fun to play with.
