freezes when i put a cd in

i've got the cable for my secondary hard drive (which i wont miss for a couple of tests) so i'll have a play around inside...
but i've only got a small room and its a major pain to open the case.. and to change the master/slave/cs jumper means i gotta take out the drives... which is even more of a pain!!

oh well... if it means it'll fix it, then why not try it...

First try the alternate cable to see if that's why both drives are having the same problem. A bad cable will goof up the works. If that still doesn't see any results then toy with cable select. Afterwards if both ideas fail then you would need a look at a possible Windows problem. The cable swap would be the first item and quick to test.

I've got them both set on cable select now, with the cable that was on the second hard drive (has double the wires of the other cable) and it still freezes for a while, but if i go to watch tv for a bit its fine when i get back - it loads!

ii just tried it then, and waited for it, it took 6 minutes to autoplay the FarCry dvd-rom... so at least its doing something

now that it is doing something, i might try that autorun fix program...

edit:
on one of the tests, i had a text box open in the background with a blinking cursor, which kept blinking while the computer was 'frozen'... so i watched the system tray clock, which kept ticking over as the minutes went by... so now i'm thinking that the USB temporarily locks up while the system deals with this autoplay problem... (my mouse and keyboard are on a USB bluetooth dongle, so they didn't work - giving the impression the computer was frozen)

any suggestions now?

its a logitech dongle that came with the MX5000 desktop, and its only one of 3 devices (motherboard can handle 10) currently using my usb ports...
i dont have a usb keyboard or mouse anyway.

I ran that autofix program, and it went through and told me that autoplay v2 needs repairs, but it couldn't repair it... i dont know why

Well let's see... Since that is a totally wireless the question here would be if you had a corded keyboard and mouse to use in order to see if this could be a possible cause. It wouldn't seem likely but can't be ruled out either. At this time something has to give if you have already tried all other avenues except a bios update if some information there was lost in the programming or a setting change has to be made.

try checking the IDE cable of the cd rom. it's not the first time that i've come across probs like this and it's the IDE cable. Plus, it could also be a problem with the ram. try to notice if your computer is beeping at startup during the POST. if so, se how many beeps and reference the number of beeps to the problem.

just changed IDE cables over... and only one single beep, meaning its all good...

so PC Eye - you reckon to have a go at updating the bios on the motherboard?

The update for the bios on most boards usually has various fixes included with them for a number of different issues seen with the original or even earlier update versions. It generally never hurts to keep the bios updated while this may or may not be needed just for the problem you are seeing here. It could be just a simple change of a bios or drive jumper setting. You just ruled out the bad cable there. Loading bios defaults could see results. A quick trip there to do that along with making sure the AGP/PCI setting is correct for your card to work properly and usb controllers enabled(mouse/keyboard support mainly).
