Fresh OS reinstall, now problems.

Well, I reinstalled XP on my desktop machine (in sig) and now I'm running into problems. When I started the computer after wiping the drive and installing XP, it got hung up on the LanParty splash screen (before the system does POST). I didn't think anything of it, because that had happened once or twice before, so I just restarted and it booted up. Today, I started 'er up, and it got hung up on the Windows loading screen. SO, I shut it off, cleared the CMOS, and tried it again. Now, it's getting hung up on the splash screen before the bios again. Any suggestions?

When you cleared the cmos you also disabled Plug'n'Play and OS 2 support. The settings in the bios are adjusted often depending on your hardware and software environments alike. If you are not using onboard video or sound make sure those are disabled. Try disabling the Lan to see if Windows then loads normally.

But I can't get into the bios to change those settings.

I've got the same board, as you, and like you, mine hangs at the splash screen sometimes. I know this is gonna sound stupid but have you just waited for a while at the screen?

Try booting with 1 stick of RAM also, or switching the two slots the RAM is in. The board can be screwy with RAM.

If you had Memtest on a 3 1/2" floppy disk I would recommend giving that a run to see if you have a bad dimm. 34erd has a good point there upon some complaints heard on that brand of memory from a repair shop.

His board has memtest integrated in the BIOS, but either way he can't get past POST and into the BIOS so he can't really do... anything.

On most boards the option to enter the bios setup is seen right at the beginning of the post tests. The problem if memory related may the dimms themselves not being capatable with the board. If he had a different brand dimm lying around that was the same type that would tell if bad memory was the problem. Unfortunately the word heard on Geil memory by some repair techs lately is if you even get to run run it.

With the Windows installation files already copied to the drive something more then memory is preventing even a shaky if not normal boot of the system. A flaky bios or chipset? A bad cap in the supply? recheck your connections as well as the four wire 12v plug that goes in near the cpu. If that came out your system wouldn't boot.

I doubt incompatible DIMMS would be the problem seeing as I've been using the same dimms for about 6 months in the computer, and I already checked the connection of teh 4pin mobo connector (had that problem before) I'm gonna throw in a diff. hard drive tonight and see if taht makes a difference.

I wouldn't have thought it would because the hdd isn't even accessed or detected until during POST is it?

If you can't even get to the option to enter the bios setup which comes up before the port detects the drives and other hardwares that could be ruled out. On a new build some boards would be rather touchy with memory. A bad dimm could cause some headaches. You best place to look here is at the psu or board itself since you can't even get into the bios.
