OK heres the problem. Ive had a dell sitting in my basement for about 6 months so i decided to look at it (a demension 4600, not too crappy, 256 mb ram, 2.66 intel cpu.. ect). To make a long story short, i left the case open and unattended and my brother dropped a pluged in speaker 3.5mm wire on the mobo, and he said he saw a "spark". haha. so ever since its just sat their.
now i did look at it back then and thought the cpu was inseprable from the heatsink (dunno why but i did). so i was recently able to get it off and i found the model. It is a 2.66Ghz socket 478 intel p4 533 fsb. Now so heres what i figure i have:
working- 256mb ram, p4 socket 478, 2 psu's(one dell 250watt one that came with my current case b4 i got a new one, which is 450watt), one 40 gig hdd, one cd-rw drive.
Not working- one dell mobo
Now i was thinking of 2 options, both include buying a wireless card and mobo
Option 1- I keep everything in the dell case(if possible to save cash). Buy a micro atx mobo(bout 40$), and use the 450 watt psu(bcuz i heard u can only use the dell psu's with dell mobos). put everthing working above in it along with a new wireless card.
Option 2- I buy a new cheap 15$ case and regular atx mobo. Put everthing working in the new case, and toss the old dell case, mobo, and psu. (this is my second choice, mainly because my parents will use this the most and they like the micro atx case size better, and if possible dont wanna spend money on new micro case)
Please tell me one of these options will work.
. If not, then is their an alternitave? Im trying to spend under 100 bucks USD, so anything to help is GREATLY appreciated. thanks for sticking around to read this
EDIT: O yea, also, i have the stock heatsink/fan from my intel 3.2ghz socket 775. will that fit socket 478 in this situation?? thanks again
EDIT 2: OK forgot another concern of mine. If i end up using the dell case like i want, the jumper cables i think is what they are(the cables that you hook up to the case for the hdd light, power, restart buttons, ect), are like pre set up in a brick like form, they arent seperate cables. So they bacicly made it easier for the person hooking up the hardware at dell, but now its stuck in a pre-molded form, is their any way to connect it instead or somthing?
