Fried hard drive?

I was working in my computer earlier (taking out a second hard drive) and when I went to pull the first one out, I got burned on it. Now my motherboard won't even recognize it, so I'm just wondering if I have fried it.

It may have to do with the fact that I was stupid enough to have my case open and working inside it when my hair was slightly damp...

Anyways, if It is fried is there any possible way to get the data off? I don't have any other drive that I can backup onto so I haven't made backups.

Is the disk spinning? If so, then you might be able to access it.

SpinRite has been my go-to program for better than a decade-- even if Windows can't see a drive, sometimes SpinRite can and it might help you pull data off of it.

If the disk isn't spinning, though... well you could try the freezer trick-- throw the drive into a ziplock and freeze it (yes, in your freezer, you know, the thing where you keep your ice  ). Pull it out, toss it into the computer and see if it will spin up. If it does, then bonus! pull all the data off of it that you can while the drive is still cold.

if it spins up with just power, but bios doesnt see it. u fried the logic card, get the part number and revision, and prob the bios ver # all this is on that PCB, look it up online, you can prob get a replacement logic card for like 25$ or less on ebay

It was just after a system shutdown. And yes, the drive is fried. (it was old anyways!)

Replacement is a Barracuda 7200RPM 500GB. 32MB Cache.

Just to set your mind at ease, the fact that your hair was damp while you were working on your PC had nothing to do with your disk failure. It's completely irrelevant.

The logic board on your HDD is probably fried, but the platterns are intouched and all your data is still there intact.Unless if you have opened the HDD.If you still didn't,DONT!:D

Take off the logic board on your HDD and take a close look at it on both sides and see if something is fried. If yes,you can replace it by taking it from the same HDD model.Just be sure that EVERYTHING is the same including firmware!Usually ALL the informations are written on the HDD stick which you will need.

By the way if your motherboard cannot recognize ANY hard disk drives then it can also be that you have fried your motherboard. In that case you are screwed bad lol and you will have to replace that too.
The good news is that once you replace your motherboard, you will at least not need to reinstall your OS and all your programs.Just perform the OS repair process using it's CD or DVD disk.
However if your HDD platterns are ALSO destroyed (very very very rarely by the way) then my dear your are REALLY fuc!ked up xD

To be honest, nothing on that drive was so important that I'd need to replace the logic board. Plus if I had my way (this is a shared computer) that would be the solution.
