Fried Processor.

I have a computer that is over a year and a half old. My processor fried so I need to buy a new one, but I just don't know what type I have. I need help!

Sony Vaio Desktop PC.
CPU: Pentium 4 3.20 Ghz
RAM: 512 mb
Video: Radeon 9200, 128mb

The motherboard had this series printed on it: p4sd-vl.

By the way this is my first post, plus I'm new when it comes to computer parts. Where exactly is the processor?

see that big fan in the middle, your processor is located underneath that.

You have the big fan, beneath that is a kind of metal block which is the heatsink and the processor is beneath

think its a socket 478

need to remove the heatsink and fan to see it, the heatsink will be attatched bya thermal compound that may have caused it to stick a bit. Make sure that any retaining arms are freed so that the heatsink is not attatched to the board in anyway. Try gently twisting the heatsink, if its nice and loose then lift at away and all should be revealed

what are you after exactly?

the processor is a socket 478, so you need a pentium 4 socket 478.

however if its fried and has damaged the motherboard then you may be looking at replacing that too

The area around it. Unless the brownish stuff is something else. It doesn't look good, either way.

Unless its just dust.
It looks like dust. If there was brown stuff there, then that might mean that the motherboard is fried.

Well. I have a huge colletion of CDs I burned to my computer. What's sad is that all that data is on my old computer, along with all my other important stuff.:(

This computer is mainly used for 2 games, Starcraft and Counter-Strike. 1.6, NOT source. I also store a lot of music in it. I don't know what else to tell you.

I'd spend about $400 for a new MoBo/CPU.

Its easy to get those files back, just take the hard drive from that and put it into any computer as a "slave" drive.

The hard drive is probably fine, so none of your music is lost. Just replace what is fried, and your good.

I'm not sure your mobo is fried. If you want to replace is thats fine, but be sure it is before you do.

Best Buy said that the Processor was the only thing fried. By the way. My computer is completely full of dust. :P

Well then i would just replace the cpu. And you might as well clean out all the dust while you have it open.
