So my buddy comes to me and says he won a quad-core at work...and by god he did a Q6600 that lucky bastard *hits him in the head and runs away with it*

Anyways he wants me to help him build a computer for it. He wont be over clocking it since he is like me..scared he will destroy his PC :P

He has this for memory all ready but so you know what he uses here you go.

Memory (has 4 sticks)

GPU (2.0)

Now what he needs is a motherboard he has 600w Corsair PSU and SATA HD etc
now he isn't the richest person so he has maybe 100 bucks to spend.

What would be a better option? Also he has a single core AMD so the quad has to work with the board out the box....I dunno if you can update your bios without a CPU can you?

He will use a GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit 2.0 his brother upgraded to some 1GB GPU so he gave him that one to use for the build.
He won't want to overclock and he wont be SLI.

It will need at least 2 3.0gb SATA connectors 1 PATA as well as 4x 240pin and support DDR800.

The board you mentioned is PCI Express x16 not PCI Express x16 2.0 his GPU is 2.0 thus he needs a board that will not choke it.

I see thanks dais we decided to try that :)

Think he will love the new system...lucky for me though his brother has a old 125w worthy phenom board I snag off him....now I just need to get a phenom ^-^

PFFT. scared of overclocking. do either of you know the possibilities available if you open your minds to overclocking?

this is one such possibility: if you choose a lowly processor you can buy a new motherboard instead of an open box item. the last open box i bought from newegg was an MSI P6N diamond and the thing refused to work whatsoever. so i decided on my current processor instead of a more expensive one, and bought a motherboard that actually worked. its your choice, but i do not suggest open box items.

That's a pretty good setup. For the motherboard I would go with the Asus. I don't know, i trust them a little more i guess. :D

Your friend is lucky for winning that quad-core :D

yes very lucky...and it works out really well for me....his Q6600 is up and running and my god its fast.
His brother came over and OC it to 3.2ghz and gave me a 9750 Phenom that he was going to surprise him with for his b-day next week.

Now this is one hell of a lucky day for me ^-^ while I know phenoms are not the "best" I like to support AMD and a 2.4ghz quad for free....I can't complain about the price vs performance on that one

Though now I gotta upgrade my board LOL but after some alarming issues coming up with my board its a blessing it happened when it did.

Either case thank you all very much for your help I appreciate it and I sure know he does.

9800GT isn't powerful enough to be bottlenecked by PCI-E 1.x x16, all you will lose is a few FPS if even that. Something like the HD4850(x2) or GTX260/280 would be different, but 9800GT... no need to worry about PCI-E bottleneck.
