I am helping a friend whose dad runs a photo store- their current all purpose machine is a PII. here are the specs for it, i think-
Athlon X2 3800+
2Gb of Corsair XMS
same mobo i have
a pretty good GPU, maybe an X1800 or maybe a 1900 if they have the money, for all the DVD and photoshop stuff they do
nice large WD HDD for lots of DVDs and pics
a couple top of the line DVD burners
case and stuff are taken care of, its a full tower with lots of cooling
- now im not sure, but they might use it as a secondary server (sorry, but their P4 server sucks).
Should this be good? ask me for more specs if i left any out.

I did kinda think of that, but 1. this is kinda set in drying concrete, so i cant change it a whole lot and 2. I dont like intel a whole lot, niether do they, had some bad experiences with them. And the X2 should be just fine.

Of course it will be just fine, just not the best for their needs. Intel has some very nice processors coming out, I would take a look.

Then why did you ask us?

It is correct, a Intel processor would be much better for the task at hand. Also, the graphics card is way overkill. those tasks are Cpu intensive, not graphics card intensive.

ok get a ati 9250 its like a very cheap card and i play guild wars maxed on iy and its beutiful its only like 40$ that should be fine

Definitely drop the video card down to something more suitable.

Also, IIRC, the Asus A8N5X doesn't have integrated firewire. If that's likely to be a problem, you might want to consider the A8N-E (or just get a seperate firewire card).

And do you really need 2GB of RAM?

They do, for running a couple other comps as a server i think... they want this to last a very long time, like their last 7 or 8 year old PII. Ill suggest to them to downgrade the card, and maybe upgrade the CPU.
Edit: ill think ill suggest the A8N-E too, i didnt think about firewire.

Maybe I didn't understand, but I thought that meant you liked Intel; you'll keep using Intel till you die (that's how I understood your sig).

If you got something like a Geforce 6200, that'd be perfect for photos. An x1800 is a total waste of money, being made for 3D performace! I would say stick with onboard video, but of course, that's stealing system RAM.

Also, single core processors might do better now unless the software is really optimized for duel core.

notice that DIE is italicised and bold or at least bigger. by emphasising the die he gets across that it sucks so much ur going to die. thats what i get out of it
