friends laptop toast?

hello. my friend told me a problem she is having with her laptop. it shuts down randomly and never used to. it happens at random time intervals and there seems to be no connections to malicious software.
the only explanation i can think of is that she took this laptop to india for almost half a year. i know they use differnt voltage there, and this could have possibly messed up the power source. do you think this is correct? and if so, what do we do from here?

As long as she used the right coverter (they make some) to connect it to the wall outlets there it should be ok. Can't really do much now without specs though so have a look at QUESTIONS 101 and post back.

Could also be a memory problem, run memtest86 (www.memtest86.com) and see if it turns up any memory errors (leaning towards memory or OS problem).

most ac adapters will let you input 100-240 volts. only downside is that it wont convert cycles. possible problems off the top of my head.

1. cpu overheating
2. some kind of virus

okay, i'll take a look @ it myself and get back to you guys. i think it might be overheating, but it takes along time.

It could also be a virus. Try running a antivirus program. If you dont have a virus program..wither get one or open task manager and google all the processes. And end the ones that are the virus or not. Than go into Safe MOde and erase the file or w/e.

wasn't there a big virus attacking windows boxes that did this? I seem to remember a patch availible for it

1. If its running then its getting the right voltage. U cant make it work on a 220V if its 110 V.

2. I think the processor is getting hot, and if the processor temperature will increase a pre-defined limit the system will shut down immediately. Check fr processor temperature with some system utilities like 'Everest' or Sissoft Sandra. Use a vaccum cleaner to clean the outlets around the laptop, be carefull. Open the laptop n see if the processor sink is firmly sitting. Place something n lift the rear end of the laptop with something n give some space fr the hot air to pass away fr the lower area.

3. the Ram may be loose or fautly, replace with another RAM module. Loan it frm a frd.

4. Use PRCviewer to check the running processes n there orgin source. it will give u idea abt any virus or such things.
