From CRT to LCD

Hello all,

I am finally looking to upgrade my CRT to a LCD. I am looking for a 17-19 inch with low ms. I am looking to spend around $200. Newegg has some good prices for Acers. I have a few questions:

What brands should I look at within my budget (>$200)?

What do you prefer, Standard or Widescreen? (I have a 7600gt so I should be good with wide).

Thanks,

T

Well, Samsung are a decent brand. Also, I'd prefer a standard 4:3 ratio over a widescreen, to be honest though, it's down to personal preference. You pick what you think you'd want, after all, it's your computer.

I am spoiled at work. At our desks everyone has two 17 inch flatscreens. So in a way I am getting used to a "widescreen" feel.

Sometimes you can get a 22" LCD which are MONSTERS for around $200. Quality brands too..

Hanns-G, I've never heard of them.

Would you buy this?

They sound pretty cheap... I think it'd be better to go 2" smaller (keep in mind, 20" is pretty big!) and have a decent well known brand. Plus, the quality will be superior.

I've heard good things from Hanns-G. I've never owned one of their products before but I have friends who have and their monitors have lasted quite ahwhile. Most of the customer reviews seem to be alright as well. However, no matter what LCD brand you go with, there will always be nay-sayers.

Hanns-G are good, I have samsung SyncMaster 191T its 4 years old, The monitor is on all day I turn the pc off when I go to sleep, and it has been working great, no dead pixels. I heard the newer Samsung's aren't too good but don't if its true. There are couple more companies like NEC, ViewSonic, LG to name a few. I was seaching for the web for something don't remember what anyways I came upon this site the offer 3d gaming monitor's, glasses etc, Here is the link http://www.iz3d.com/ I dont know if they are cool but looks pretty cool playing games and everything on the monitor comes to life. Maybe the only downfall would be the price for some. If I find a review of the monitor I will post it for you guys.

19" or 22" widescreen is what you want to go with. i got my widescreen for $217 after tax at circuit city. there's a hanns-g 22" widescreen at newegg for $180 free shipping.

the reason i bought at circuit city is because its $35 cheaper than best buy (would've gone with best buy otherwise) and if there's a dead pixel you can just bring it back and replace it and have it the same day. but, hanns-g is a good brand from what i hear, aside from their customer support being sub-par. newegg will replace it if there's 4 or more dead pixels though (again the reason i went with a circuit city monitor instead).

btw, gaming got better.. even world of warcraft, you can see more things to the side. if not, you can watch movies on it. i watch a ton of movies and the widescreen actually makes it use every inch of the screen, so it seems more like a 27" full screen when watching movies. it's just as good as my parents tv, except theirs is an old 27" CRT tv. lol my dad is cheap when it comes to technology.

yea, ACER is the best brand for monitors if you ask me, but i went with a cheaper brand through circuit city (AOC), they have a 14-day return policy if anything is wrong with it.

hanns-g is good too, but either way i wouldn't buy from newegg if you can get something that's only $10 more expensive, just because newegg only replaces monitors with 4 or more dead pixels. my last one from newegg had 2 dead pixels and they refused to replace it.

note that bestbuy (after tax) will be about the same as newegg (after shipping) only with best buys 30 day return policy, and circuit city will be cheaper than both of them. i bought a 22" widescreen yesterday at circuit city that's how i know... circuit city will replace it for 14 days.

also remember to do a dead pixels test. dead pixel tester

it cycles through different colors for you so you can see if there are any dead pixels. it's quite helpful when buying a new LCD monitor.
