i use to have my 5.1 speakers plugged into the back of my computer and because i switch between headphones and speakers so much i would just turn off my speakers and plug my headphones into the front audio jack.
BUT, today i got new speakers (2.1) and now the front audio no longer works, output or input. but my computer does detect that i plug them in and out etc. and i can adjust all the properties as normal. i made sure nothing was muted. i really have no idea. the headphone work fine in the rear jack. i really cant see what caused this or how to fix it.
