frustrated with new power supply

I have an emachine t2792 and one day it just stopped turning on. I did some research and it looks like the problem is most likely the power supply. I bought a new supply that was said to be compatible with the bestec atx-250-12e. I installed it, plugged all of the cables in, and when I plug the power cord in the power button lights up. I try hitting the power button but nothing turns on and the power button just stays lit up. I need help. I tried pulling out the small battery on the motherboard and waiting 30 seconds but the same thing happens when I plug the power cord back in.

I would appreciate any help you guys can give me. I am planning on building a new computer eventually but I really want to just use this one as my desktop for now. Thankfully I still have my laptop so I can get this figured out.

Thanks,
Robert

Well with so little info i couldn't diagnose a possible problem but to reset the CMOS you need to keep the batterey out for longer than 30 seconds. Take it out, unplug the psu, and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then leave the battery out for another 5 minutes.

After the 5 minutes, do I put the battery back in and then plug the psu in, or the other way around?

Sounds like either a bad mobo or bad ram. Try running 1 stick of ram at a time in different slots.

I tried what you said with the ram and still the same problem. I will probably see how much the local computer shop will charge to take a look at it to diagnose the problem. That way I can make sure it wasn't a problem with the new power supply.

If it is the motherboard, what are my options? Can I get a better motherboard and cpu and use the same case? (obviously i would probably have to get new ram too.)

Thanks,
Robert

Thanks for the help bebopin, I figured out the problem. It looks like the same issue has happened with a lot of emachines. The power supply fails and takes the mother board with it. I keep seeing the same exact problem that I have from a lot of different people. They even started a class action lawsuit 2 years ago. Not sure of the status of that at this point.

Still need some suggestions on what my options are. Where do I go from here?

My first guess is that you connected the power switch to the mainboard backward. Reverse the leads and try again.

If it is a known problem and there has been legal action taken, contact emachine and tell them of the problem. If the court appeal got passed they will have been made liable for all problems caused to hardware because of this fault and will replace/fix the hardware for you free of charge.

If you contact them and this isn't the case then get a new motherboard. Find out a couple of things:

1. The size of your case. ATX, mid ATX, mini ATX etc.

2. The model number of the processor and it's socket type. For example all core2duo, core2quad, pentium dual core are 775 socket.

3. This is only for if your power supply is still ok. The number of pins to the motherboard. Look at your power supply connectors and the biggest on will have either 20 or 24 pins. This is the number of pins you must know. just count one row and double it.

4. If your power supply has blown you will need a new one of those too.

In my honest advice though i would say what bigfella has already said:

stop buying shit

Not quite as bluntly, but along those lines. emachine are known for being cheap, crappy, nasty pieces of grade-a bollocks. Bite the bullet and buy a decent system or build your own decent one. This will be cheaper and funner to do and there are guides out there or this forum that will help you out with building a system if you don;t know how to.
