Hi. I recently ordered a touch screen with windows 8. I am not a computer guy. I do very little with them. At any rate I hadn't researched windows 8. I don't like the negativity around it so i'm returning it. Also I have 2 friends in IT that say they don't like it and wouldn't have it. And now they are coming out with 9 soon???????????

I get tired of that, as soon as you get 1 thing something else comes along.

So then I was thinking i'll just get win7 but now they are ending support as soon as this january.

So what the heck? Maybe i'll just keep this xp until it blows up. It's working fine I just thought i'd get with the times but not so sure now.

What do you all think? Alternatives? Stick with XP until they get their crap together?

I have no freaking clue.

End of mainstream support for 7 is this January. Extended support for 7 ends January 2020.

And no, don't go back to XP. XP is dead and more vulnerable than you can imagine.

I'm not going back to xp............i'm using it right now.

I think it's 8.0. Whatever that is.

I may wait to see what 9 is like not that far away. But then no way i'm buying it on release what if it's another disaster?

I guess 7 wouldn't be so bad I see the extended time just doesn't add new features so if I get something with 7 it will just be a cheap machine. Not sure yet.

There's nothing wrong with Windows 8. People just don't like change.
I use windows 8 on my work computer and windows 7 at home. Yea there's a difference but nothing that would make me want to stop using 8.

That might be true. But now i'm reading 9 is supposed to fix 'all that is wrong' with 8 and will be coming out shortly. I'm not buying something that's being replaced in a couple months.

They need to knock the crap off but then again how else will they keep you in perpetual debt trying to keep up?

win 9 is a ways from being released and you seem to be missing a very good point made by voyagerfan99.winxp is dead.not only that but it is a malware magnet,a very vulnerable os.just as there have been cheap upgrages from earlier operating systems there will likely be one from win8 to win9.i would get win8 and download and install start menu 8 if you dont like the tiles on win8.did you in fact try the touchscreen with win8 as that os is made for a touch screen,or did you just listen to other peoples opinions and send it back without a trial? as for win9 "fixing all that is wrong with win8",who says that? microsoft?they also said vista was going to be so much better than xp and win8 was a breakthrough in technology and ease of use.lol.

Man you need to take a break and relax I think.

OK so you don't like Windows 8. What do you do? You continue to use Windows 7 since it will still be supported for 5+ years.

For your information, Windows 9 is due to be released next year at some point. But don't use XP until then. Either put up with 8/8.1 or use 7.

Windows 8.1 is fine. You'll get used to it. Contrary to many, i believe its their best OS to date. Rumour also has it that 8.1 pro users will get free upgrade to 9.

I would probably agree with that. And you will definitely get used to how 8.1 works and then you will not want to go back to 7 or any other previous OS. Especially XP!

Al it is is Windows 7 with "charms", a flatter GUI, and no start menu

Actually there's a lot of 'under the hood' changes they made, so it's not really Windows 7 with a fancy GUI - which was basically Vista. :P

I don't think you guys understand.......my computer that I am using 'right now' is several years old and is XP.

Some of the comments have given me new found confidence in the 8.1 I will look into that.

I really don't mind if it's different like I said I don't do a lot on here anyway. I just know what i'm hearing about 8.0 and most of the time nothing good.

Who is it you hear stuff like this from? I'll bet it's other uneducated PC users, because that's the only time I ever hear anything negative about Windows 8.

Usually those who are hating on Windows 8/8.1 are those who have never used it and just go with the 'popular opinion'. Same as those who hate on Windows Phone and those who hated big time on Vista. Granted, Vista wasn't the best, but with SP2 it was better than the majority of people made it out to be.

Curiously if you have 8.0 and then 9 comes out...............can you install 9?? The money isn't so much the issue as the subject unless it's a huge amount I don't know. Also if it's a real pain I wouldn't be interested either.

Like I mentioned earlier, i'm not a pc guy lol.

They usually have an upgrade path. For compatible versions it will probably mirror something like this:

Yes of course you can. Otherwise how do Microsoft make money? ;)

Did you misstate what you don't like about Win 8? The way I read what you said is that you don't like Win 8 because of what others say/think about it. "I don't like the negativity around it so i'm returning it" Why in blazes would you care what others say/think about the OS you use?

Is there something specific that you don't like about Win 8? I struggle to understand what people don't like about Win 8 since if you take away the Start screen (nothing says you HAVE to use that), Win 8 is much the same as Win 7. If you absolutely can't get by without the Start menu then you can always install one of the crutch apps like Classic Shell.
