Frustrated......

Hey guys,
Im new to the forum, and Im hoping you can help me out. I have tried doing searches via yahoo, and the microsoft website, but to no avail. Hopefully I am posting this under the appropriate topic; if not, I appologize. So onto the source of my frustration. For the last few months, I have been having a bit of a strange issue with my computer. It is an HP desktop, with Windows XP Home edition. The problem is a little bit long winded, so bare with me. The problem is that at random times, I can't click on certain things on my computer screen. For instance, after I first turn my computer on, I am unable to click on the "start" button, or anything on the task bar. I move my mouse to those areas, and click it, but nothing happens. I can click on the icons on the desktop fine, but I can't click on the start button or the task bar. On rare occasions, something similar happens while Im surfing the internet and have internet explorer up, as I can move my cursor around the screen fine, but I cant click on anything on the webpage. I cant click on any links, any pics, any icons.... I can't even click on the "minimize" or exit button on the top right corner of the browser. Strangely enough, when this happens with an internet web page, I AM able to click on the start button or task bar without a problem. Now, the good news is that I have found a way to temporarily solve the problem, but its only temporary until it flares up again, or I restart the computer and the start button and task bar freeze up again. The temporary fix is by hitting "ctrl, alt, and delete" but this is where it gets really weird. When the windows task manager subsequently pops up, I dont disable a program, or reboot the computer, I just merely close the task manager window (hitting the X in the upper right hand corner of it), and suddenly every thing works fine again. Im dumbfounded. Hopefully someone can help!! Im sorry that Ive been so long winded, I just wanted to make sure to explain it to the best of my ability. Any thoughts or suggestions?? It would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance. Keith

I really don't know how to help you with your problem, but to get more responses you should make a title that has something to do with your problem, and if you are going to type that much you really need to break it up into a couple of paragraphs separated by a line.

It makes it a whole lot easier to look at and to read. When people come into your post and see a solid wall of text, its very discouraging for the reader.

Have you done the basics? Have your antivirus/firewalls up to date? Scanned for spyware/adware? Wiped your computer clean with, say, CCleaner (just an example, not THE cleaning solution. works fine for me.) and/or other programs that clean HD/Registry? This kinda things do wonders to all kinds of mysterious problems...

At first i thought it was just low specs but as i read on with the task manager i started to be baffled. Rules out alot. Only thing i can think of is virus scan and spyware.

He's a newb, and heaps of them only check their threads every few days. Maybe he didn't know/expect that people here can reply in a few hours. This thread was started just yesterday...

this guy sucks
he doesn't even reply to his own thread. it's a complete waste of time.
 Cripes, dude...

You have 20 Posts under your belt...
You respond aggressively to a Thread...
You don't *help* the OP in the Thread...

Seems like someone might be on fire:D

^ Ditto; started 14 hours ago. Maybe he had to go to work, then sleep, or sleep, then work. :)

To those who offered suggestions, thank you for the help. Thus far nothing has worked, but I still have a few more things to try.
To those that have been critical of my posting format, it was my first time on the forum; I kindly ask that you be patient. To the gentleman who said "this guy sucks," Im not going to even dignify that with a response. Its kind of hard to be sitting in front of a computer all day to respond immediately, being I deal with 72 hour work weeks, and I am in the process of selling my existing house, and buying a new one. Sorry that I have a life.
Thanks again to those who offered help and didn't just use the opportunity to take jabs at me.

Do you have a lot of programs running at Startup? If your CPU is bogged down trying to open too many at once, it will prioritize it's tasks, ie - opening programs first, then responding to user-input. There's a lot less CPU-power used when clicking to select (but not open) a Desktop Icon that's already shown than there is to open the Start Button (an expanding GUI with several other expanding GUI's under it). If you're unsure of what programs run at Startup, go to START, then RUN, they type 'msconfig' (no quotes) and hit Enter. Go to the Startup Tab and un-check anything you don't need to run at startup (Adobe Updates, Real Player stuff, IM programs, etc.). Really, you can drop down to just having your AV Program run if you want, but you don't have to.

Strange, Indeed. When you use CAD, take note of the Processes running in the lower left-hand corner. For the average Home-users, it should be low-to-mid 40's for the most part, unless you have gobs of stuff running in the background. I'd take note of that number both when your system is running fine, and also when you need to use CAD in the manner you mentioned to do the temp fix. Are there any discrepancies?

Also, welcome to CF! Take no heed of the random Trolls and Flamers that infect every online-Forum, one of which has so pleasantly graced us with their presence already:P Most of us are super patient and more than willing to lend a hand:D

Well, I figured out what the heck was causing my problem. I was too focused on the computer software such as Windows being the problem. When I finally thought it out without being so narrow minded, I finally discovered that the problem was the wireless Microsoft mouse. When I switched back to the old wired mouse and keyboard, the problem completely stopped. Whats strange is that I have had the wireless mouse/keyboard hooked up for quie some time, without a problem, so Im not exactly sure why it is suddenly being a butthead. I tried checking for updates for each of them, but there are none available, so Im not sure what other options there are other than uninstalling and reinstalling the programs. But regardless, at least I know whats causing the problem. Thanks to those who were patient with me, and offered help, especially you Jay. Its much appreciated. Keith
