FTP between Laptop and Desktop

On my Desktop pc that does not have a dvd burner I have a 4gb file I want burned to a DVD. My laptop does have a DVD burner.

Could I use a FTP program like Filezilla to transfer the 4gb to the laptop? I don’t have a 4gb flash drive and I thought ftp would be the quickest way. Is there a way to do that?

so if i dont have an x-over cable i could use a router and two cat 5's and just connect them?

what would i do then? would some m$ box pop up with options or would i have to use filezilla?

Yes, you could use a router, switch, or ethernet hub and two patch cables. Then you could network both computers in a workgroup. Then you could share the dvd drive.

honestly, you shouldn't really need a cross over cable (well maybe not) most ethernet ports on switches and NICs are auto-sensing, so a patch cable is fine in most cases.
