Fun with my hard drives

I’m having lots of fun with my hard disks at the moment.

My current C drive developed some error on Friday and Norton GoBack attempted to reboot the PC but failed. After running CHKDSK in thorough mode it appears to have solved the problem and at the moment the drive is working again for the time being although Event Viewer reported several problems including events 7 to say the disk has some bad blocks and Event 55 suggesting some important files had been corrupted.

I had a similar thing happen a year ago with my old Maxtor HDD and I had to replace it. It’s still inside the machine because it’s still readable but I haven’t made any changes to it and although I did manage to boot into it a couple of when I tried a couple of days ago it now won’t boot up again.

Fortunately all my data is fully backed up and I’m hoping this current C drive will keep working again now for a while but as it’s only just a year old I’d really appreciate if anyone could please suggest any ideas as to why this keeps happening to my hard disks.

Also what program would anyone recommend to find and mark bad clusters so windows won’t write to them.

Thank you in advance for any ideas peeps.

Now you see that's a really interesting question. I did have an electrical surge prior to my Maxtor drives failure a year ago and I then bought a UPS and am now running all my important gear through that and I've had no surges this time.

Interestingly this latest problem prompted me to have another go at trying to fix the old Maxtor drive and I seem to have managed it. Considering I never reformated it or deleted any of the windows setup I can now boot into both the WD320 drive and the Maxtor.

BTW Event viewer on the old Maxtor drive reported Events, 9, 51 and 55 amongst others. I know what events 51 and 55 are about but Event 9 apparently suggests a problem with something other than the hard disk which I'm not expert enough to troubleshoot.

I think I know enough to keep it all working though so thanks for your help. :-*
