I am buying the first-gen xbox + 100 or so games for $75 (plan to work him down to $60) so I figure I need a xbox controller for my emulator now as I don't have room to have all that crap laying around my game room :P

So has anyone tried this before?

The only thing I don't like is it doesn't come with a wall charger as I distrust anything charging off my USB....I seen the result of a backfire. Though I wonder how many use AA rechargeables and how long will they last vs the batteries that come with it and do I get a warning on the controller when the power is low?

Though I hear iffy reviews on it so would it be better going after a wired controller? How long is the cord on a wireless controller as well?

So what do you think?

FYI I am using Amazon because I get coupons every once in a while for free so I either sell um or buy something I might fancy but not want to spend hard earned money on :P

Thats actually a stock xbox360 gamepad. and it comes with a usb wireless adapter.
so its run by 2 AA batteries, and cant be recharged by USB.

the cable of a wired controller is 3 meter, plenty. :)


I got the wireless thingy, works perfectly. but then, I only bought it because the shop priced the wireless one cheaper than a wired one. :D (they fixed their mistake right away tough, but I got it for the cheaper price. )

this is the adapter that comes with the gamepad. this is connected to the pc, and you jsut bind it with any xbox 360 controller, and you're set. (works also for the guitar hero controllers etc. :D )

3 Meter that is roughly 9 feet right?

Yeah but I dunno which way I wanna go....I would only use it for emulation and on rare occasion for PC gaming on crappy direct console ports :p
So my question would be are they pretty much a gimmick then (aka ones that claim made for windows) and all are stock 360 controllers that will work with Windows and you just need the adapter for wireless?

The wired is looking better and better :P

Yea all stock 360 controllers will work as long as you have the wirless adapter. You used to be able to get the adapter separate for about $20 but now you can only get them bundled with the controller(or pay about the same price for it on ebay). I use a wired one it works fine for me the cord length is defiantly not an issue if anything there is to much.
 
hmmm dang looks like I would have to buy a longer cord....I need at least 13 feet to prevent stress on my board + reach my recliner where I do most my gaming via emulation (PC to TV setup)


I am curious on AA what is the typical life on them with the controller?

You can use any USB extension cable to extend the length of the cord. Depending on how much you play and what batteries you use a couple of weeks. Mine last me about a month before I have to recharge it and I play about twice a week for about 6hours total.
 
batteries last a pretty long time in the controllers. even longer if you dont have accessories attached, like the mic or chat pad.

FYI though, you will need to buy the wireless receiver also for this controller to work with your pc. the cable that comes with the battery pack will only charge the controller. even though it installs a driver when you connect to the pc with the charge cable, it WONT transfer controller data, just current to charge. a corded controller will work w/o the wireless adapter though (of course).
 
The 360 controllers are a little glitchy for pc. If you stop moving a joystick it often makes you slowly keep walking or turning. It's a known issue that calibrating doesn't help.

I'd buy a xbox extension cable, cut it in half, and wire it to a usb. Everything's color coded and you can download the driver (xbcd) for free.
