Future of nVidia

Does anyone know why nVidia's stock is performing twice as badly as the Dow? Considering the current situation, it isn't surprising that nVidia's stock is taking a big hit, but nVidia is down 80% from it's high. To me, nVidia's future looks good. nVidia has been pretty dominant in graphics chips and, considering that the gaming industry is one of the fastest growing industries, one would expect that nVidia would be able to capitalize on that. However, I read that nVidia recently stated that it was going to withdraw from the chip making business.

Does anyone know what is going on?

They're not making any money on their 200 series cards, so that's one reason. The GTX 280 debuted at over 650$; shorty after the release, they were forced to slash the price of that card by over 30% due to competition from the Radeon 4xxx series. I've also read that the GTX 260 costs more to make than it's current price point, so they're basically losing money with that model.

I'm starting to wonder too, but with the economy dropping, no one has the money to buy anything anymore :(

yeah thus the increase in pirating as well. Charging more for everything but paying the same pay check its total bull****.

If we don't change soon I see a second depression coming :(

They've also had a number of lawsuits ranging from anti-competitive practices, faulty integrated graphics in desktops and notebooks, etc...the faulty GPU case led to an immediate cost to the company of over 200 million, and that's actually when the stock began to spiral. They've even been sued by their own shareholders for attempting to cover-up the defected GPUs.

Bad year for nVidia, but I'm more than happy with my GTX 280. :P

Nvidia will bounce back I have a feeling.

i really hope so i love nVidia, i really hope they can pull them selfs together and release something that will beat the 4870 X2, it would be sweet if they did another 7950 but with the GTX 280 chip, *dreams of 6 way SLI, man that would be sweet*

I find it odd though.

Intel and Nvidia team up...Intel does very well and Nvidia suffers.

AMD and ATI team up...AMD suffers and ATI does very well.

Kinda ironic.

Wouldn't that mean that the GTX 260 is a bang for the buck video card? lol

NVIDIA hasn't teamed up with Intel... or even if they have, it's not even remotely as significant as AMD-ATI merger.

NVIDIA and Intel seem more like competitors; Intel makes great integrated graphics solutions and has snatched a fair bit of market share form both NVIDIA and ATI in low-cost mobile/integrated graphic markets.

That's EXACTLY what I said. With this war in Iraq and everything and economy being so screwed up, I dont know what the outcome of it could be.

Well yes, it IS the best bang for the buck - still.

Wouldn't that mean that the GTX 260 is a bang for the buck video card? lol

It just worked out that way - best bang for the buck. I got mine 5 weeks ago for $199, and I got a free game - broke an egg.
So yeah, it's slightly better than the 4870 - all the reviews have it an edge ahead, it's BETTER on power 30 less in idle vs 1-3 more in full power (although the reviews like the score the 4870 better because of the full power diff).
It's also a better overclocker -
And it wins in all the games by a slight margin except devil may cry 4 - and perhaps a random other...
If you want to do 1920X --- rezz, at 26 frames in crysis - 4870 wins that ONE crysis stat - loses at the others.
So yeah, it IS the best bang for the buck.
Lots of the 4750 and gtx9800+'s and 4870 are either about the same price - 50 bucks less for far less performance, or $100 bucks more for slightly less perf.
Now the 4870 HAS DROPPED LIKE A ROCK - oh my- IT'S crashing IN PRICE...
( BECAUSE - although review sites and reviewers and fans won't tell the truth I outline above, the FACTS speak directly to their pocketbooks...)
So yeah, the STORY is not about Nvidia crashing and dying - it's about -ALL OF US WINNING WITH COMPETITION...
I checked Nvidia's STOCK PRICE - and yes it has gone down - bad year recall and lawsuits - not the usual price drops... that are affecting it - and it has been recently lower - 3 bucks in '04 and it survived...
Been a lot higher too - around 20 bucks or so I don't recall exactly.
:D
as for the war the other guy mentioned- that always PUMPS UP the economy - yes I know- terrible isn't it - all that profiteering - but people get paid - a big war would give us another post WWX 50 year top of the world ride... :P
The economy issue is the lyin' chetin' congress critters buyin the vote with forced loans- and insane credit card/ loan charges - that used to be considered "part of the mafia loan sharking price structure"...
Oh well, they know what they did even if the average American doesn't - and so the little underpants will fill up if they don't correct their marxist economic planning issues.
Either way- they CANNOT KILL AMD ATI and NVIDIA - because we will
CRUSH THEM IF THEY TRY ! :)
Long live the videocard wars !
