Just wondering what type of mobo you guys use with the G.Skill ddr2800 ram. I was looking at buying the Gigabyte p35 ds3r, but I went on the Gig. website and none of their motherboards are compatible with G.Skill so I'm in a bit of a bind.
 
I think you are referring to PC2700 DDR333 memory there. The older AMD Socket A(462) models as well as older Intel boards would use less then DDR400 PC3200 memory. All new boards will see DDR2 at this time. You will find a little harder at this time to find boards previous to Socket 754 models for AMD.

That Gigabyte Intel model board uses DDR2 800mhz memory as the supported. You have to start looking for newer memory for plans on buying a newer board out.
 
lol are you serious?! maybe i've just gotten lucky in the past because i've bought random models and brands and they've worked with my motherboards

suptt is asking about ddr2800 which there is none. That would be typo for DDR333 PC2700 memory. The newer boards run DDR2 and will soon run DDR3 memory that is already available.
 
so PC eye, I'm actually getting the same mobo in my build later this summer, and will any PC2 6400 (800mhz) DDR2 ram work?
 
That was my question. And the memory I have is DDR2-800
This is it:
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)

I guess it was confusing because I connected the DDR2 and the 800 sorry about that.
 
See I went to the manufacturers spec. page and the ds3r supposedly doesnt support any G.Skill ram, however I have seen some posts on here and on newegg where people have used G.skill ram. Just dont know which model they used.
 
G.Skill and GEIL memory are often heard about as "if you get them to work run them, if not...". Often it seems some memory won't be capatible with certain boards. The best place to look is at the specifications on the board you plan to get to see what that supports and not simply go by buying memory and then look at what boards will run it.
 
Thats what I did. I bought the G.Skill at the same time I bought my first ds3 board. That board was DOA so I am getting a new board and I already have that ram. I just wanted to see if the ds3r would take it, if not I will get some other type of mem that will work because that is the mobo that I want.
 
The specifications show DDR3 1066/800 memory for that model board. You are in a slight bind with DDR2 800 memory. That would be like trying to run DDR400 memory on a Core 2 Extreme model board that runs DDR2 800 memory. You ordered the wrong memory probably explaining why the first board failed to start. It wasn't the board's fault there.
 
That DS3 board takes DDR2 800 memory, as well as the DS3R board. It just said it is capable of taking DDR3 doesn't mean you have to use it, I'm guessing. I'm definitely not nearly as knowledgable as you are here so I must be misunderstanding what you are saying. Your not saying that the DS3R must use DDR3 mem. are you because I do know that thats not the case.
 
Sorry once again PC, I didnt see that jughead was using the P35C-DS3r. I have the P35 version.. So you were right, his does use DDR3, but mine does not, just DDR2 800/1066. Once again sorry about that I was just misunderstanding which board he was using. So do you still think I'm in a bit of a bind with the P35 DS3r board, with that DDR2 800.
 
The specifications seen at Gigabyte show DDR3 as well as DDR2.

MemoryDDR3:

  3. Support for DDR3 1066/800 MHz memory modules
DDR2:
  1. 4 x 1.8V DDR2 DIMM sockets supporting up to 8 GB of system memory(Note 1)
  2. Dual channel memory architecture
  3. Support for DDR2 1066*/800/667 MHz memory modules
If the memory you ordered was defective or you ran into what I did here when swapping supplies and nothing was seen due to a loose contact in the 12v molex type cpu feed you assumed the board was bad. Unlike the difference between DDR and DDR2 memory all DDR3 is a faster DDR2 240pin memory geared for faster fsb model boards. That model simply supports the faster memory while many only go to DDR2 667 or 800.
