Game lags hard every 1 minute and 5 seconds exactly

I can't believe I just lost that whole post

Here we go again. For anyone familiar with the quake style lagometer, I am experiencing a big chunk of red (about 1/5 of the lagometer) every 1 minute and 5 seconds exactly. The game I usually play is Soldier of Fortune 2, but it also does it in Call of Duty. Here is what I have tried to do to fix it:

  • Adaware / spybot / microsoft spyware removal (nothing)
  • Virus scan, update etc. (nothing)
  • Disabled anti-virus
  • Killed all unnecessary processes and services
  • Uninstalled any programs I don't use anymore (cleanup never hurts anyway :p)
  • Defrag
  • Reset modem (ADSL, SpeedTouch Pro 4-port)
  • Monitored netstat, modem NAT list - nothing
  • Reset game config
  • Monitored processes - explorer does come to the top every minute when sorted by CPU usage, but only out of the game. In game I can't see anything at all that stands out as an offender. SoF2MP.exe takes keeps 99% of the cpu the whole time while playing, or System Idle when not.

There's probably other things I've forgotten to mention, but I am really at the end of my tether here, my next option being reinstalling windows, however I'm not really keen on that, cause I just did it recently and I'm getting sick of it.

My computer specs are:

AMD 1800XP
ASUS A7V-233e latest bios
512mb
2x H/D, 1x 40g (split 10/30, OS/data), 1x 200g - all drives about 40% free space, defragged
Realtek PCI NIC
SBLive PCI sound

Like I said, I'm keen to fix this without reinstalling windows, so if you have any ideas how I can track down this problem and solve it please let me know! If you need more info just ask. Thanks :)

PIO? I don't know what that means, but the drives are running as 40 primary 200 secondary on IDE1. This hasn't changed recently.

One important thing I did forget to mention is that it only started a few days ago, at a time when I cannot recall making any changes to my system at all.

Yeah I'm thinking of calling them, but they're a really big company and you only ever get the generic phone monkey who goes through the generic steps I've already done. I've asked other people in game if they're with the same ISP, some are, and they're not experiencing it. Still, I guess it could be worth a try.

As praetor said are the drives in PIO (programmed input/output)...This is a CPU hog, even if only one drive is in that mode. Check all your drives make sure there in DMA (direct memory access) mode.

Older drive speed, PIO 1-4 and then ATA33-133 for PATA drives.

P.s. You also never mentioned what OS you're running or what GFx card you're using (unless I'm going blind).

Nope you're right I didn't, ASUS GeForce 4 (I can't remember the exact model, a good one) and Windows XP.

Where do I check for the DMA mode? I know where it is in Windows 98 but can't find it in XP

Hmmm

Is this internet connection lag? If it is, make sure that you do not have any program that periodically detects something. I had a problem like that with PC Alert with my old MSI motherboard. I would also have it with other monitoring utilities. Try to shut those off.

JAN :D
