Gamer: Athlon or Penthium

Hey !

I am planning on buying myself a Gamer's PC and I have been reading stuff on the internet about ATHLON vs PENTHIUM. The way I see it, Athlon is better for Gaming than Penthium.

I need to find out what you guys think about it ?? Any Gamer's try both processers and if yes, which one do you recommend ?

Thx

"Everything is a test !!"

It's really just your personal preference. Most people i would think recommend Amd. I dont see why either one would be lacking. Amd usually has a lot more performance for the price when compared to pentiums.
If you wanna take a look at some comparisons of the two you can check here http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/athlonxp-3000_2.html . rather lengthy but gives you a good idea how they compare in different scenarios.

Thx for the website, I went thrue it and its a good tool. I used to go on tom's harware.com.....but this X-bit website is way better.

Thx for the advice and from X_bit, i got the impression that AMD is better for Gaming.

Realistically it doesnt really matter much if you go AMD or you go Intel. A couple pointers though:

AMD
- If you are getting an AthlonXP, make sure it uses the Barton core
- If you are getting an AthlonXP, make sure it isnt better than XP2800 because both the XP2500 and the XP2800 can easily OC to well past the XP3200 -- save yourself soem money (of course, if you're not into OCing then ignore this point)
- For gamer board, get an nForce2 based motherboard from a reputable maker like ASUS or Abit

INTEL
- Stay away from the P4E (Prescott)
- Your best option as far as bang for buck is to go for the P4Cs (NorthwoodC)
- Similar to my point about the XP2500/XP2800, I wouldnt buy faster than a P4C-2.8 or a P4C-3.0
- As for the board, yout best bang/buck option would be a board based on the i865series chipset

Also the barton core has 512kb of L2 cache as opposed to 256kb on the previous thoroughbred core. Makes a big performance difference.

A very solid performer; if you've got the money go for it... I'm considering a FX53 (or whatever it will be) for my Novemeber/December rig .. we'll see how much budget goes

Praetor

I'm not saying this to be an ass :D but I'm on TOUR in Afghanistan and have only one week to go to complete my 6 months and made a fair amount of money.....so here's the deal : I plan on spending between 2000 $ and 2500 $ in CAD. I want a PC built for GAMING and SURFING ( emails, paying accounts and stuff ), all I need is the tower and its components. I have a monitor, mouse, keybord and speaker system (surround). For a sound card, I don't want to invest money cuz I find that the factory base card is fine by me !

What do you recommend ?

What do you recommend ?
You contract me to get you one... that way I can get some money for tuition :P ... if you're talking in CAD then might I assume you would be from Can? (and thus we might be able to work something out differently? :) ) In either case, let's see:

MOBO
- ASUS A8V Deluxe (http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/socket939/a8v-d/overview.htm)
- A very solid mobo all around, designed for the new A64-Socket939 interface and accepts both the Athlon64s and the FX-53s for a lot of all around compatability
- $225CAD

CPU
- AMD Athlon64 3500+ (Newcastle)
- A solid chip you wont regret: just enjoy the performance and dont get into pissing contests :)
- $560CAD (if thats a bit rich, you can always "drop" to the 3200+ for $400CAD)

RAM
- 1GB Corsair TwinX1024 -4400 (http://www.corsairmicro.com/corsair/products/specs/twinx1024-4400.pdf)
- You give up on timings 3-4-4-8 but timings arent really important for what 99% of consumers use their memory for anyways.... the raw Mhz is much more benificial when it comes to making the most of burst mode access to memory. These sticks are matched beforehand for Dual Channel applications and I'm sure you can push the memory much further than 3-4-4-8 if you wanted to
- $450CAD

HDD
- Segate Barracuda 7200.7 SATA (http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/discsales/marketing/detail/0,1081,599,00.html)
- A very solid performer and shockingly "cheap" for what i'd thought it to be. Use this drive for installing stuff to and keeping stuff that likes good solid transfer rates
- $200CAD

OPTICAL1
- LiteOn 52x32x52
- Argueably the best (affordable) CDRW drive available (although I'd tend to argue for the ASUS 523252 but those are harder to come across).
- $35CAD

OPTICAL2
- Pioneer 107
- Since you've got a "2-sheep" CD burner theres no need for the Plextor burner (which is expensive as hell)... this is the next best thing
- $120CAD

CASE
- Cheming 601AE (http://www.chenming.com/)
- A very solid case, used a lot -- for good reason. Comes with 400W Enermax PSU
- $85CAD

HSF
- Thermaltake Polo735 (http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/comboCool/a2144Polo735/polo735.htm)
- An excellent HSF; initially I would have reccomended the Venus12 but the Polo735 is virtually the same cooler except it is also comaptible with Intel and AMD32 chips adding to the lifespan of the cooler
- $50CAD

VIDEO
- eVGA 6800GT 256MB ( http://www.evga.com/products/moreinfo.asp?Part_Number=256-A8-N344-AX )
- This is the midrange card for the new nVidia's 6800 line of chips. Lots of people will compare the 6800GT to the X800 and argue (when) the X800 beats this card, that the X800 is better. Sure it's better: but the X800 is the top end card and this is a medium end card. Personally I'm kinda surprised this is a 1-slot deal but yeah, enjoy the card and dont get involved in pissing contests. From a technical point the reason I chose this card was because (a) the card is clocked fast enough regardless of what people will tell you and (b) the inclusion of Pixel Shader 3.0, while not horribly a big deal, does add some life to the card
- $525CAD

SOUND
- Soundblaster Audigy 2
- You're not keen on the fancy audio but having an independant audio processor helps with the overall gaming performance by not burdening your CPU
- $85CAD

NET COST: $2335CAD
Not bad all in all

Yeah....not bad at all !!!!!
And yes I'm Canadian....are from from Canada also ?

Next question...seeing your so well informed PC wise may I continue taking advantage of your knowledge? hehe Building up the PC part by part instead of buying one already made for gaming from a PC store adds up to a higher cost doen't it?

THat's what it says :) ... Red and white! Red and white! (oh god it sounds like im cheering for Ati.... we should change the national colors to line up with nVidia :P)

An excellent quote from one of my buddies, "you're gonna spend a certain amount of money anyways; you might as well get a better system then some OEM junk" :)

Your friend has a nice QUOTE, ill keep that in mind. By the way, I'm inb Afghanistan, as a Canadian Soldier, coming back in 4 days to buy my PC...............MAN I CANT WAIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

REd and White.....REd and White.......those arte the colors of ATI but I think you sold me to NVIDIA.....but we'll see about that!!!!! ;)

Buying a rig like that - the first fun is building it yourself. I change almost every 12 to 15 months and built all myself. Only this stuff I'm using now sort of let me down. But I still stick to Asus/Nvidia. Those ready to go things are always full of stuff you probably do not want and at the end of the day you still have to purchase you os cd and other software to do your own install. If I may steal a bit of your show - Praetor that is more or less what i have put together as a replacement for this.

Cannot see how we can go wrong

Praetor, I marked down the specs you suggested and I'let you know when I get back home what I do with it....thx a million. Your time and effort are much appreciated.
