games freezing for no apparent reason take 2

hi again, sorry but my last thread seems to have crapped its pants after I tried to post in it last and now when I try and open it it says database error, my lucky day huh.

anyway my problem was that games are freezing after a couple of minutes of gameplay for what seems like no reason? all my temps are stable, all my drivers are up to date, lastest version of directx etc... when its freezing, only the game freezes, not the operating system... so it seems graphics related... no idea what the go is here.

system specs are;
AMD AM2 3800+ dual core
Asus M2v
Samsung 1gb DDR2
Asus 512mb 7600gs
Western Digital 320gb sata hdd

this is driving me up the wall, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! I've checked my direct 3d, direct sound and directx using the directx diagnostic tool and it checks out all good.. I really have no idea whats causing this!

thankyou archangel, downloading those drivers now:) see how much luck I have with those. Also you're right in assuming I was running x32:D

can I ask, why does urs freeze when sli is enabled? shouldnt it just kick ass with those 2 cards?

edit: been playin games for a while now with not a single freeze up! your a life saver! thankyou

damnit! it just started happening again out of nowhere! I reinstalled the drivers and stuff and its still freezing! damnit! I played for a couple of hours the other night with no problems after reverting to the older drivers!

HELP MEEEE!

I have, but what I didnt actually mention is that this is a brand new system so it has just been formatted and whatnot, so its all fresh...

another thing which slipped my mind was that I'm using a 20 pin power supply on a 24 pin motherboard... is this a bad thing? theres 4 spare pins on the motherboard... maybe theres not enough power making its way to something which is causing graphical applications to fail? any ideas..

would it be wise to invest in one of these?
http://www.xoxide.com/20-to-24-pin-adapter.html

my power supply is a JSP bluefire 500w, I actually have a spare power supply which is a 24 pin but its only 300w and its just a standard power supply... I'd rather get an adaptor if that is going to work over the other power supply...

thoughts? :D

Wow, yes! That is a huge deal! I would definitly buy the adapter! And don't use your computer until you apply the adapter, your computer is not getting the appropriate power. Im surprised it booted!

thats very interesting actually... still running fine:eek:

can somebody explain to me when/why this has changed? I've been out of the computer game for a while.. so why 24pin?

You really should be using a proper PSU. I would imaging there is a high possibility that your troubles would go away.

I'd imagine you are correct blue:)
I cant be bothered driving to the closest computer shop (not close) just for a cheap connector so I'm gonna make my own adaptor, I'll let you all know how I go:D :D :D wish me luck haha

Well.. like said, i still think its a software issue.. the 92.91 drivers i linked you were beta drivers,.. they work for me, but that ofcourse doesnt nececairely mean they work the same for you ofcourse (especially since i run win xp x64, and you the 32-bit version for example :) )
try http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_91.47.html ( 91.47 ) this was an actual released driver. :o

I also still believe its a software issue, archangel I really appreciate all your help, thankyou.

the 92.91 drivers worked fine for me for one evening then decided to give up? I really dont know whats going on there! wierd stuff! anway I'm downloading 91.47 now, I'll be sure to let you know how I go:)

well... software unstabilities.. well, it can run for weeks and then suddenly crash, or it runs only for a second and then crashes.. its pretty luck dependant i gues. ( maybe run Memtest86 tough,.. just to be sure its no corrupted RAM, since that can also mess up programs http://www.memtest86.com/ download the Iso, and burn it onto a CD,.. then put the CD into the drive and reboot.. it will test the RAM before windows starts. and if the RAM is good, it shouldnt find any error,. the program has no end, so you have to end it yourself (esc or so iirc).. just make sure it ran for like 20 minutes or so :) )

gah! those didnt work either... I'll have to get some more blank cd's as I have run out:eek: then i'll have to do that test, oh I guess I could do it from a blank dvd...

I must have missed something... what are the blank cd's for? I still recommend a new PSU (even if it is not the issue).

You might have mentioned in the other thread but what are your specs? PSU brand also please.

my power supply is a JSP bluefire 500w:)

blank cd's are for the memory test program

I put a fan in front of my gpu and now temps are not only stable at idle and unerload but super cooool, so its definately not temps:D

if it was the power supply (which I severely doubt) wouldnt the whole pc be freezing rather than just the graphical application?

I really think its a software/driver problem of some sort because the game/graphical application always stops a minute or 2 into gameplay regardless of load, temperature, etc... always. Got me completely stumped! completely stumped...

at least my wankel engine still purrs like it should:) mmmm mazda rotary:D

I have never used that program but it sounds awfully strange. I"m sure there must be some that wont require blanks cd's:confused:

Perhaps yes... Although it would might take a 3d game to put the system under enough load to freeze or crash your pc. I'd imaging you would not be able to recover back to your desktop as well as you do though. Point is I am a firm believer with using the proper equipment. This is why I still suggest a new PSU.

I know you said the PC came new etc... I'd re-format anyway. Perhaps you can shut down all unnecessary processes if you have not. remove all unnecessary software if you have not. If you have folding @ home installed, disable it.

Edit:

You still did not answer my question to it's fullest... what are your system specs? Also if this PC is brand new then perhaps you should be calling customer service.

Also I'm making a judgment call and moving this thread. It seems that your problem lies with all games and not one specifically. It is more of an issue with PC running poorly (not necessarily just games specifically) It is my hope that you find an answer to your issue a bit faster in this section of Computer Forum.

Please do answer my question on your specifications, this information can help people when lending you advice. If you did and I'm missing it somehow then I'm sorry.

Edit again:

I took a trip one page back and see you mentioned your specs already.. My apologies I jump around allot (thread to thread) and sometimes it can be a pain to read back :P.

yeh i've tried running on basics etc.. theres no extra software hangin' off the side of windows dragging it down... I built this pc and did the installation myself so I know what is and isnt on it kind of thing, theres nothing hiding from me that some douchebags like dell or hewlett packard have put on there:D haha

I've even tried running it without having explorer running, no luck... dangggg

everything is sweet, why no go? not cool
