Gaming Build (First time)

I think he should go with a 1000w so he has ample space for CF and overclocking

@john06937
I didnt know about the 5970 CF performing lower than the 5970 single card.
thanks

Yeah, you won't need two 5970's. When a faster card come out it is not likely that you will need more than 850w.

Here is a 5970 review with a i7-920 at 3.36, total power pull is 530w, you will still have over 300 to spare. 850 should be fine...

http://www.anandtech.com/show/2877/16

Even when they OC the card you still have 200 to spare, I think OC'ing the 5970 is a waste though, it is already fast!

I believe I'm going to wait for the Cooler Master HAF X case to release. The Antec 1200 case looks nice, but I think I like the Cooler Master better.

How do these look for memory and motherboards: Option 1 Option 2 Option 3

Will I really need liquid cooling? If so, here's a cheap one I found.

How about this Corsair 950w power supply?

Here's a 100GB SSD and a 1TB HDD I found.
I also have a feeling I do not need an Intel Core i7 980x.

totally up to you. plenty of good cases out there for you to choose from.

i am not very familiar with intel motherboards but for the ram i would go with the red mushkins. all are the same speed but the mushkins have the tightest timings.

you do not NEED it but with a splendid budget like yours, i probably (in my own opinion) would spring the extra for the liquid cooling. you could get by with air if you want though, totally up to you.

the hd 5970 in crossfire is often bottlenecked like crazy, even with good components surrounding it, and ends up performing worse than a single hd 5970.

Ok, so what you need is a build.

CPU $290 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115225&cm_re=I7-930-_-19-115-225-_-Product i7-930

Sound Card $50 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132013 ASUS 7CH

$2520, I can't believe the price is so much but you get a faster computer with a good SSD, ASUS is the best 5970 due to the 3 year to anybody without a receipt warranty. The case hurt the build plus MC has the i7-930 for $199. I did not factor rebates or look for combo deals.

Edit, your build also had a card reader. $15 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...e=card_reader_internal-_-20-223-103-_-Product

New total $2535

whoa, a 7950? i need to get me one of those :P

for the ssd you could always get a regular 7200 rpm hard drive or even use raid. you won't see any performance hit in games but the total loading time for windows is longer and the loading in games (i.e. between levels or menus or something that has a loading screen) will take longer. in some other cases you'll actually see some difference, such as file transfers, but doing things like navigating through windows won't really have any noticeable benefit. i personally would just use a raid setup or go for a 10,000 rpm drive.

SSD or not is up to you but at least get the WB black drive over the green drive. For one it has a longer warranty, two it is faster.

+1 the WD caviar black is a really good drive
Yes that's a very nice drive. I'll get that one instead. I don't think I'll go with the 950w power supply since it's unnecessary and it's actually $30 more with both rebates.

So I updated these:
HDD: WD Caviar Black- 1TB 7200RPM 64MB Cache- $100
Motherboard: Asus Maximas III Intel P55- $175
Memory: 8GB (2x4GB) OCZ Reaper Edition- $270 (I don't want to have to update my RAM a year or two later to accommodate the newest games)
Fan: Noctua NH-D14- $90
SSD: Kingston 128GB SSD- $260 (Found a cheaper version)
Sound card: None- Minus $100 (Integrated sound on motherboard will suffice)

New total: $2287
New total after rebate: $2267

I have to wonder though... when I use an SSD and a hard drive together, does this mean the data I install on the SSD will open much faster? In other words, I should install the OS and most used applications onto the SSD so they'll be zippy? And this means everything else installed on the HDD will be slower, right? I don't know if RAID is worth it, since it sounds a little unstable. I don't want to lose all my data...

What do you guys think now?

yeah setting up raid 0 does make the chances of a failure increase.
definitely install the os and applications on the ssd and put everything else on the hdd. that way the apps and windows will be "zippy" and you will not have to try and store all of your files on such a small drive.

watch out for that open box mobo. it may not matter to you but you aren't guaranteed to get all of the accessories, one of them possibly being the i/o shield... it is a gamble.

i doubt any games will need 8gb of ram before you do a total pc overhaul again down the road but if you really need 8gb and want to spend an extra $100 then go ahead.

good choice saving money by going with onboard audio :good:

no no nno no no no no

the board you selected is a P55 board you need an X58 board with the core i7 930
and you also need memory in multiples of 3 like 6 gb or 12gb for optimum performance since the core i7 930 has a tripple channel memory controller
and go with the 950W PSU its seriously worth the 30bucks and it will be a lot helpful in future and will save you around 150 bux if you want to go CF in the future
and go with the mushkins RAM as they are of really good quality and perform really well

That sounds good then. RAID seems a bit complex for me... I can't believe I didn't see it was open-box! I would never buy used items for such an investment...

Alrighty then... Using 6GB seems like the perfect sweet-spot for me, so that'll save some money. Does anyone know the best (Or at least really good) onboard audio chips?

Change the motherboard too and also the PSU
The motherboard is not compatible with the processor the sockets are different
P55-1156
X58-1366

and for core i7(900 series) u need - 1366

The old Kingston SSD that you found is not as good, that is why I recomended the other one. Something about the chip inside it being updated.

Same as the guy is saying above, you cannot put a 1156 MOBO on a 1366 CPU.
