Gaming build for buddy!

Hello,

Building a rig for my buddy, PC club ripped him off (rig sold to him at the bottem). He plays WoW and would like to max his settings and play like a CHAMP! Hows all this together sound? Am I missing anything? He'd like to stay right where we are at or lower with the price but if you have suggestions that bump the pirce up a tiny bit thats not a problem. Feedback is much appreciated!

GTX 460 should be your minimum for a gaming rig. Their down in the $140 -$150 price range for the 768MB cards.
 
Well we are going to roll with Radeon only so if he wants to later he can crossfire (will he need more PSU for that?) and not have to replace the card (if he was to go with Nvidia. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Sticking with the current CPU and PSU as well (unless there is some reason these are poor performers compared to the suggested)

I liked the suggested Mobo and stuck it in.

Looking at Passmark the 4870 is rated higher then the 5770, whats the reason? http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

i know people like to get ones with the onboard video incase your card fails (:rolleyes:) but this one also has sata 6gb/s and usb 3.0 and can do crossfire (16x/4x). just a suggestion.

go with the phenom ii 955 and oc it.

with the extra money i'd get a 1tb f3 spinpoint hard drive (only another $20).
 
Hey Joh,

1. is the 955 being suggested only to save 20 bucks?

2. The motherboard you suggested, is this because price point and will achieve the same thing?

3. He has 1.5 TB external, he doesn't care to have more hard drive then 500gb. Maybe he will take it anyway, ha, thanks for the suggestion.

yeah it is mostly to save money. the 955 and 965 are basically EXACTLY the same except for the stock multiplier, which you can EASILY overclock (if i am not mistaken they have the same cooler but don't quote me there).

the motherboard should be able to do the same thing as the other one you had. they are almost identical except for:
1) the asus has onboard video
2)the asus has 8x/8x crossfire while the gigabyte has 16x/4x crossfire (each one should perform about the same [each isn't that far from 16x/16x performance as it is]).
3) the asus doesn't specify the power phase but i would assume it is likely to be similar to the gigabyte one.

ha ha...

are you going to overclock past 3.4 ghz (the 965's stock speed) at all?
 
oh shoot, i didn't realize the 6850s were out yet. maybe try checking out one of these

the 6850 will outperform the 5770 by a somewhat decent margin and consume about the same power.
 
Well we went with a 5770 that's factory overclocked at 900mhz. As far as OCing the cpu, for wow do you think he will need too? His gaol is just to max his graphics without sacrificing performance.
 
Damn, well if he wanted to could he crossfire the 5770 with the 6870? (What happend to all the numbers in between????)
 
hmm, not entirely sure about that. i would assume the game would probably be more gpu demanding but i am not sure. i would start with the cpu at stock and the gpu at the max settings he wants to run it at and then oc the cpu a little and see if that improves performance and then decide whether or not ocing is something he wants to do (and then get the aftermarket heatsink, which is what i was hinting at :P).
 
H probly wont need to OC his CPU anytime soon anyway. He already got the 5770, think a 6870 can be crossfired with that if he decides to lateR?
 
lol. as far as i know, any two (or three or four) cards with the same first 2 numbers can do crossfire (i.e. 5850 and 5870). i am assuming crossfire will be supported between the 6870 and 6850, so if he went with a 6850, he could always crossfire it with another 6850 or a 6870.
 
Well, Hes already ordered the parts, theyve been shipped and we will building next week :D. I'll let you know how it goes!
