Gaming computer for around 2000, local?

Hey everyone,

I have never ever had a good computer, always bought "hunks-of-junk" for 500-$800 that would get tons of viruses and spyware and crap out on me after a year. so it is time to upgrade.

I have saved up roughly $2000 for a new computer,
I want something strictly for gaming; Warcraft, Diablo, counter strike, etc.

I want this system to run these games on high performance settings without lag.

I do not know much about computers, and am going out tomorrow to a local computer store, or a best buy, future shop, any local store in Ontario Canada.

I am not going to download music on my new computer, or movies, I will use this computer for that. But I want to finally play video games and MMORPGS without frustrating lag and disconnects, or playing WoW with the lowest performance settings is trash!!

Anyway, I hope someone could tell me what I need to look for to achieve my goal. Also in a short time like 12 hours since I am going out tommorow.

I dont care if it is a desktop or laptop I just want PERFORMANCE.

I would recommend getting a desktop instead of a laptop. I can try and help you get started but if you don't know how to build a computer there is a topic on this site. But let me look into some stuff for you and I'll give you some links.

Would you order it off the internet? Or do you want to just buy one from best buy?

Fully agree with Metallica17 that if you want to game the desktop is the way to go. And with your budget you can build one very serious gaming system.

I do have a question concerning all those viruses and malware infections: What security software did you run?

One other thing: Do you have a preference between AMD or Intel, ATI or Nvidia?

Is it possible to get a very solid gaming system from best buy or futureshop? because I would want to buy it from a local store such as them,
there are even some other privately owned computer shops around me so I would need an idea, on some STANDARD stuff that I should look for, and if you could help me that would be amazing,
now that I see people have viewed and responded I will check back much more frequently.

I ran Norton... everyone tells me its crap but its just what came with the computers I bought, any other suggestions?

And as your second question is about the video card right?
I am pretty illiterate when it comes to computer systems and such,

Or you can also go for the core i 930 the build can be adjusted so that it makes the budget but form gaming I have grown a liking toward the i5 750 though the i7 930 is definitely better but its an ovekill for gaming

if they gave you win7 , click start menu, right click on computer then click properties, screen shot that by pressing ctrl+shift+prt scr, paste into paint, cut out the part you want to show and we'll see how you did.

Wow i'm really hopping I didn't get ripped off that much, cuz I really love the computer. I have only had a day with it but so far it performs like a champ.
