Gaming computer upgrade

I'd just get a proper PSU and be done with it. CX600 would be marginally more expensive than the CX500 and is able to power pretty much any single GPU configuration. CX500 is fine too, but if you're going to upgrade, might be worth it to get a better one now so you have upgrade potential later too.

The gtx 760 really needs a 500 watt power supply. You'll most likely burn up the power supply trying to run that video card. Get the CX500 and it will have the correct power connectors. He may have an older model cx430 which may have only came with a 6 pin connector

Yes I suggested he should upgrade his PSU and I still think he should, but then we moved on to why he was having problems with his 760 and I thought getting an adapter would be a good way to test if the card worked properly first without spending money on a new psu.

Faulty graphics cards typically are going to artifact or something like that. Just flat bad performance is likely due to insufficient power. Card is probably fine, I wouldn't spend money on an adapter just to test that.

I was hoping he already had the adapters, they usually come with most cards. He only needs the one and I bet they are very cheap.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad idea by any means, but I personally wouldn't even bother.

Ok, i get it now. I thought you mean that my gpu should have 2 extra plugs... but ye my psu has the extra plugs, but there is no place to put it in the gpu

First of all, go here and download the driver for your current OS here.
http://www.geforce.com/drivers

Then go into programs and features, uninstall the amd driver, reboot pc and then run the install for the nvidia card.

But you will still need a higher wattage power supply.

So should i have uninstalled before i put the 760 into the computer? Cuz i did right away :P and/or must i buy the cx500 before i use the 760?

You can uninstall the old driver now, reboot, then install the new driver. Don't be playing any games until you buy a new power supply, don't take a chance on blowing something up by stressing the power supply.

Umm ok.. does corsair CX500, 500w PSU sound good? And also
Kingston ValueRAM DDR3 1600MHz 8GB for faster everyday use?

Those would be fine unless you decide to upgrade your video card even higher, which you would need a higher wattage power supply.

Yeah, like frying the power supply trying to push the card. Regardless he needs a new power supply to push any decent gaming card.

I meant damage to the card, for example you have a power supply powerful enough, but you don't connect all the power connectors to the card.
