Gaming Monitor

Blue....as you may know, I just got those speakers about a week ago. I mounted the rear speakers to my wall. After some calibration, they sound great!!! As for the monitor, very nice!! I have a 19' Samsung 915N and love that thing. I've always had CRT until I picked up this Samsung. It has an 8ms response time and, like you, I have noticed zero ghosting. Only downfall I percieve from LCD's is the native resolution. I am not sure what your Viewsonic's native res is but on mine its 1280 x 1024. Thats fine. My issue is if your computer is not quick enough to run games at 1280 x 1024, you lose out in image quality.

Mine is 1280x1024 also but my computer is fast enough to play most games at that resolution. To be honest games at 1024x768 look great. I played FEAR at this resolution and I thought It looked just fine. Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour won't play anything higher then 1152x864 and it looks great. And I'm currently playing Vampire Bloodlines at 1152x864 and it looks real good. I've read good and bad reviews on the monitor. One reviewer said that other resolutions lower then the Native looked perfect while other reviewers said it still suffered from Interpolation as all LCDs do. I would suggest that It most likely does suffer Interpolation but if you are like me you don't notice it much even when your testing all resolutions on a certain game.

Thanks for the kind words :) and I hope you enjoy your LCD for a long time to come.

My first switch to an LCD monitor was when my parents bought a compaq that came with a norcent 17" LCD monitor. It was just when LCD's were coming on the market. That one was fine, except blurring was apparent, and the plastic border around the screen was friggin huge. Now just recently I bought myself a computer, and I bought a BenQ 17" monitor with a 12ms response time. It was the cheapest 17" LCD monitor at Futureshop, but god does it ever blow away my old one! I play a lot of games, and I dont notice any ghosting. I'm not saying that its impossible to find it, but you sure would have to look for it to notice. The colors are brilliant, the screen is crystal clear, and I dont notice any degrading when playing games at lower than the native resolution(due to my crappy graphics card). LCD's are much easier on the eyes too, and take up MUCH less space. It makes your setup look SO much cleaner.

awesome monitor. I'm getting a new monitor soon. I'm getting 15 inch lcd. I don't like those big load of monitors thats have a butt sticking out of the back. Those are priceless. I'm getting a cool one from dell.com

Blue why you so cool?

Anyhow... im guessing 8ms is the best? Dont know much about that stuff... and hertz. I do like Viewsonic brand, but 400+ is too much money. I was thinking of 2 x 17inch LCD's. Just any black Viewsonics.

As for your 5500 speakers, how are they in games like CS. I have headphones, and I can hear people coming from any direction around me. Is it the same with speakers, or do you just hear noise all around? Can you really pin point the direction?

I love your desk too, depth is big enough to put keyboard on top, I hate the trays. Also what is that thing to the left of the monitor, looks cool.

Blue... why you so cool? Also, contact me Blue, got a question.

No 8ms is not the best but it is dam good. My screen has a 3ms grey to grey and a 5ms black to white.

Yea you really can pinpoint where the sound is coming. If someone is behind me then I hear them in the rear speakers that sit just behind and off to the side of my chair.

Thank you :). I could not find a desk that I liked so I went to a furniture store where they sold unfinished furniture and bought a small dining room table (which is my desk) I then cut the legs shorter so that the table where at a comfortable height cut the board on the side I sit so my legs would fit under comfortably and stained it :). So yea it begun life as a dining room table then modified to be my desk. I'm not sure what you seeing to the left of my monitor but I'll name everything on my desk :). to my right there is a speaker and lamp with a picture of two wolfs under it as well as my mouse sitting on it's charger. On the left of me is another speaker along with the control centre for my speakers and a stuffed dog. Under the monitor is a little remote control truck.

hey blue is this the monitor cause i was thinking of getting it

Yes that is it. Notice both links you showed there have the same monitor but the specs change slightly. Don't be too fooled by this as pretty much everywhere I read it is like this. Reason is that it started life as a 4ms grey to grey but ended up being able to go grey to grey in 3ms so many advertise it as that and others still advertise it being 4ms. Also you'll find places where it will say 5ms black to white while others say 6ms. either way it is a really fast monitor and I love it! I recommend it to anyone. I just finished play a session of NFS Most Wanted where it ran it flawlessly.

Edit:

contact me Blue, got a question.

I cannot because I have IM turned off as I had trouble awhile back with a forum member and found it best. Feel free to ask in my thread here though.

if i got that monitor at newegg or tigerdirect would i be able to return it if it has any dead pixels on it at all.

You prob. could although I personally don't know. It should say on their website or maybe you can contact someone there. I bought my screen in a store which is my proffered method. I have however read many reviews and there were no dead pixels and mine is fine also. A heads up, Viesonics dead pixel policy sucks from what I understand it is 7 dead pixels which is high. But their monitors are quality and happily I report no dead pixels.

That thing... Has the Logitech symbol, What is that?

It is the control pod for my speakers. The big knob on it is the master volume and there is a row of smaller black buttons there that do various things as well as power off the unit is a little button in the lower right corner. You can also plug your headset into it as well as other input devices such as an I-Pod and it will be amplified through the system.

2 mice? The bottom one is the MX1000, Does it's battery die often or somthing?

The MX1000 battery's last a respectable time and I find myself charging it every couple of weeks but it only needs 3 minutes of charge per 1 hour of use or something like that. I usually charge it for 3 hours. Anyhow the reason for the two mice is because I wanted this particular keyboard and it came with that second mouse on the charger. I have to use that charger for the keyboard because it is the sensor also. I figured if it has to be there then I might as well keep the second mouse handy as a backup. on the charger/sensor works with both mice and keyboard but I cannot charge the MX1000 on it. I use its original stand for that which does not sit on my desk. I rarely use that second mouse but when I do it works nicely and I can switch back and forth for both mice on the fly. So no the battery does not die often but It is nice to have a backup in the event I forgot to charge my MX1000 and it came with my keyboard so why not.

PlayBoy September edition page 73, I mean.... what is that? (lol)

:) good one but with a computer all my adult material is kept on the hard drive :P. That is actual the corner of a very girlie style ceramic coaster hehe. I use a coaster at my desk as I don't like to get coffee rings on the newly finished surface :).

hey guys new to the computer world, but just wanted to say that i also picked up this monitor and it really does a great job. I play online games and it does a bang-up job of keeping up with the rest of my system. just thought i'd share. :D

how many watts are those speakers there huge

Thanks for the welcome guys. Those are M-Audio BX-8 powered monitors. I double as a musician, and use my computer system to track music. Each speaker is self powered with a 130 watt amplifer. The main output of my 2zs goes into a MOTU 896HD which sends the signal to the monitors. Here's a link to the motu unit:

Best of luck to whomever picks up the ViewSonic.

See you guys around.

I have a question about DVI. I see that your monitor comes with a DVI and a D-Sub connection and that many new video cards come with DVI outputs. I know that DVI is a way to convert the image to a digital signal but what are it's benifits? Is it clearer than using a regular connection? Does it improve performance? I only ask because I've been thinking about getting an LCD monitor, and have been reading reviews where people complain that there's no DVI for certian monitors.

I like your set up by the way. My desk is one of those that comes with tons of little compartments and cabinets for every little thing. I hate it.

blue.. i'm thinking of getting this monitor and a prerequisite is that it must be able to play games very well as well as movies. in your opinion is this the best monitor in the pricerange, and will it last me through college (4+ years from now)?

another thing.. my monitor sits on a shelf about 4 inches above my desk itself. do you think this monitor will be a problem since it only tilts, or do you think it will be fine?

my computer definitely isn't capable of playing games at the native resolution, although i read you say it looks just as good. hopefully this won't be a problem...

thanks!

So sorry. Been very busy lately and not had much time to visit Computer Forum.

The monitor is very game capable and looks simply fantastic at other resolutions in my opinion. I play many games on my setup and few games don't even have 1280x1024 resolution as an option and I'm forced to use lower. Games like Command and Conquer Generals would be a good example. I've also played FEAR as well as Vampire Bloodlines etc. at lower resolutions and they looked frigging marvelous :). As for the spot you set your monitor this might not be the best choice. The monitor only tilts as you already know but it only stares straight ahead or tilts back, Don't really tilt forward. It is best sitting on the desktop where its lack of adjust ability should not be as much an issue. This is a 3ms grey to grey with a 550:1 contrast. Viewsonic is getting ready to release if they have not already a 2MS grey to grey with a 650:1 contrast just for a heads up. I highly recommend the monitor for gaming and videos look stunning but you might have a problem with the lack of adjust-ability of the physical monitor.

I have a question about DVI. I see that your monitor comes with a DVI and a D-Sub connection and that many new video cards come with DVI outputs. DVI VS VGA :). Well depends on who you speak too but I'm sure the monitor makes a big difference also. I would recommend making sure it would have DVI. You see computers are digital and the image that is created by your video card is digital but it gets converted to Analog when hooked up to a CRT. When hooked up to an LCD the "True" image that is being outputted from your computer is being shown and there is no conversion at all. Usually when something is converted this way (digital to analog) something is surely always lost. I have hooked up my screen to my computer via the analog connection to test the appearance myself and believe the digital signal was much more crisp and clear.

I like your set up by the way. My desk is one of those that comes with tons of little compartments and cabinets for every little thing. I hate it.

If you are talking to me then I thank you :). If you are talking to mpisarcik then I'm sure he appreciates the kind words also :).

Oh and also wanted to say that the monitor came with both VGA and Digital cords! :). Something that you hardly ever see. Also the cords are unbelievably long.
