Gaming Screen Resolution

Why do people want higher resolutions when playing games?

Its just more of a drain on system resources.

I play crysis on 800*600 to get a higher fps (well thats cause I have a GF 8400)

Is there any real advantage to having a higher resolution?

Higher resolution looks better overall. With more pixels in your imagine, you have more detail, and ultimately you have better quality. Gaming enthusiasts attempt to make nice gaming system in order to play games like Crysis on a higher resolution than the lowly 800x600.

It makes the game look better generally. Less jagged edges a sharper picture etc. It's like the difference between high and standard definition tvs.

Beat me to it. lol

Run your game on the lowest resolution possible. Then you'll see why.

True. The difference is extreme. I play WoW and the lowest resolution is unbearable. Using a higher resolution usually increases what you can see. If you increase the res on you computer everything shrinks, allowing for more material to bee seen on a full screen.

yeah ^ but when i used to play Enemy Territory i would play at 800x600. because even though it was awesome to have it at 1280x1024, i could headshot way more easily with everything bigger. most of the pro's used to play at 800x600.

Another good example of this was counter-strike 1.6. It was much easier to play at 1024x768 than at 1280x1024.

My desktop reolution is 1280*1024 but i prefer a higher fps in games then a high resolution (unless im getting upwards of 125 fps on 800*600)

The headshot thing is the biggest annoyance with 800x600. I'm using a nvidea gt7300 or something shite, and in crysis you couldn't really see people in the distance in any detail, and you find yourself peering at the screen...

Enemy Territory is the only game that i can train myself to kill well with headshots.

any other game i just aim mostly at the body because for some reason its just not the same. so usually i will play at 1280x1024.

I you have good components it the best of both worlds. You can have the high resolution/frame rates and still be able to get head shots and beat the opposition.

nah like the lower resolutions allow me to see the heads bigger on screen and therefore hit them better. it has nothing to do with performance.
