gateway 600ygr shuts off...i have an idea

its only under stress, when its at idle the cpu temps are around 58-63 degrees

its a 1.6 ghz, single core i THINK....i just got it from my dad and i dont have any info on it, dxdiag just says intel pentium 4 mobile cpu 1.6 ghz

and it shut off even when running dxdiag...



i have no experience with laptops, i do know if a cpu gets too hot it will just shut off and 95 degree's celsius (under load) seems really hot

the fan is coming on, what is used to cool the cpu on a laptop other than the fan?
 
It's probably overheating. It's quite typical for laptops. I'd check the fan, be sure it's clean. If it can be accessed easily, you may even remove the heatsink and blow it out. I've seen them get quite clogged up and almost require you to remove them...

Besides that, try to limit what's running in the background. Do a scan for viruses/spyware/etc. Heck, even reload windows if possible...it's amazing how much a fresh start will help performance sometimes.
 
thanks for the response, i just reformated it, and reloaded windows

i believe i will blow it all out like you suggested, it is pretty old and has never been cleaned out to my knowledge
