Gateway Audio troubles

My friend has a gateway DX4710 it was an instore display desktop and the onboard audio hasnt worked since he got it. Does anyone know if theres just an updated driver we should install or is there any other process thatll help us figure out whats wrong with it? any helps appreciated

Does the sound card show up in device manager? Does it act like audio's working (IE no errors when trying to play music, audio-spectrum bars in sound properties).

Yeah it doesnt show up in sound properties at all. Hes been using like an m-audio mic input and sending the audio through that to the speakers but it doesnt support surround sound and lately its been messing up on us too.
