So i got this laptop about a month ago and the sound card seems to be acting weird because it is kind of crackly and doesn't sound right so i was going to uninstall the driver and then reinstall it. However under the device manager under the sound tab there is 2 things installed for sound. How do i know which is being used? Also on gateways website only 1 sound driver is listed.

thanks,
mike

Why don't you remove both of them, reboot the computer and see what driver it installs by default? And if it asks you where to install the driver from, use the updated driver from the site. :D

I would also remove both drivers and reboot...

if you have correct search from the site I suggest to use it.

good luck!

Hi,
you may have a virus. a good FREE virus protection brand from Microsoft is brand new and is called, "Microsoft Security Essentials". Try that if you don't have protection, if you do, then run a thorough scan. NOW.

Thanks

the discussion at hand is about DRIVERS and CRACKLING SOUNDS, not viruses. dont give advice if you have no idea what you are talking about... thanks :)

anyways, to the op, dont do windows default drivers. download the one for your laptop from the website. if its an executable folder, extract the files to a folder. uninstall all drivers for the audio, reboot the computer, and when "found new hardware" wizard pops up, install them manually. you can do this by clicking "no, not at this time" and "install from a specific location" then just browse for the files you extracted

if that works fine, the drivers install with no problems, and your audio is still crackling, try some headphones. if its crackling in the headphones as well, it could be the integrated sound chip going out
